Code Help SRS-00D5 (Only)

Post by Luciendar21 »

I'm looking at a 2002 Volvo V70 XC for my mother-in-law. It's got a few OBDII codes (P0030, P0700, P0705), which all seems straightforward (Front O2 Sensor, Transmission PNP Switch are simple replacements). It needs a rear wheel bearing (again, simple fix). But for $2300 the mechanic that is selling the car (it was one of those bring the car in for inspection but decided not to fix it and left it with the mechanic situations) will install the Wheel Bearing, O2 Sensor, and PNP Switch and put an inspection sticker on the car (NH)... so all well and good for a 165k mile V70 XC.

There is one remaining issue. The SRS-Airbag Service Urgent warning is on in the information center. My code reader doesn't read airbag codes, so I had to wait for him to throw his scan tool on it. He got back to me today to inform me that the only code he sees is SRS-00D5. Most of the time when I see this code on forums, its accompanied by a half dozen other codes about the airbag system, but not here.

So my question is, could this be as simple as a bulb for that light or am I still looking at a whole instrument panel replacement? And if that's the only code, is there really any harm driving the car with the warning light on? It sounds like the rest of the airbag system is working fine.

Hate to tell you but on these cars the SRS is typically a dealer re-set only.
Maybe others will chime in with ways they dealt with it, but I'm not hopeful for you.
You can drive it- if you're in an accident, the airbag probably won't deploy as the way I read this, they are most likely turned off.
Other posts I have read regarding this problems pointed to possibly needing a DIM reset (or new battery- if you disconnect, do it with key in position 2 and re-connect with key in position 2 again). It may not be that bad though. Otherwise, others mentioned making sure all fuses were pushed in tightly with no corrosion and to pull and push back in all relays. Finally, one guy found a frayed wire in his steering wheel that is part of completing the circuit for the SRS. If all these simple measures don't work, then off the the dealer with VIDA to reset the lamp. Good luck!

Why would it be a dealer reset only? VIDA+DICE isn't really an issue. I was strongly debating picking up an interface for my diagnostic laptop (an old ASUS EEEPC I use only for reading codes with my ELM327 OBDII reader and playing Pandora in the garage), probably this one on Amazon. A $100 tool does not a dealer-only issue make, unless you're saying that the unit I linked will lack that capability.

I'm also not following some of the things you are saying. What gives you an indication that the airbag system is turned off? Does it turn off automatically whenever there is an SRS code? I see no indication here that anything except an intermittent failure to light up the Airbag Warning Light occurred. Even if it is off, I would still recommend this car for my mother-in-law. An AWD Volvo with it's excellent construction and traction but without airbags is still likely to be much safer in an accident than any other vehicle she could buy under $3000 with airbags and much more likely to avoid getting in an accident. My concern regarding the airbag system is an unstable state where there is a potential for an airbag unit to go off unexpectedly, which there is no sign of.

I also see no indication of DIM failure. From what I see on the dash and in the system, it would appear it is diligently reporting a basic error, not "on the fritz" as is so common. Let me explictly ask the question, is there a separate airbag warning light, or does the information center simply display SRS-Airbag Service Urgent and the center warning light (yellow/red triangle) light up? I have been unable to find any pictures of the dash showing a warning light for airbag or any diagrams of the dash lights.

There is a decent chance that it is something like a fuse, frayed wire, or simply needing a reset. The car sat for over 2 months without being started before I arrived to test drive it. It did start right up for me, no need for a jump, however. Still, sitting in the icy winter conditions could easily have lead to a short in the fuse box, etc.

Hi Luciendar21

It's very easy to trigger the SRS warning in the DIM. Disconnecting the battery incorrectly or pulling the fuse can set off the SRS message. Pulling the climate control or radio to replace lights can also trigger the SRS light. This may have happened quite innocently. It needs to be read and cleared using Vida/dice. I wouldn't trust generic code readers as they can set you off looking for stuff that isn't broken. Very good idea if your looking after the car to invest in Vida/DiCE as it will help you long term. This site has a lot of people with a lot of experience diagnosing Vida codes. It is the software designed for your car. On another note:
There should be a light that looks like a chair with a round blob in front of it. This should light up when you start the car or have key in pos II. It is red and should go out after the car is started and you have the seat belt on. That red light will go off and the orange triangle should then light up in the DIM. Are there any other messages in the DIM?
Good luck with the car,
Matthew

I didn't recall seeing an airbag light in the warning light panel, however upon extensive scouring of the internet (watching dash YouTube videos so that I could pause it at exactly the right second when they turned the key into the on position), it appears to be the light immediately over the Check Engine light, which did illuminate when I turned the key. The only position that did not illuminate was the top/left position, which appears to be the seatbelt warning light.

My guess is corrosion or a fuse or something caused a delay in the light illuminating when I started the car for the first time in a long while and that threw the code. It sounds like a simple clear of the code will resolve the issue. Thanks!

No. The issue is DIM module. That bulb is LED. DIM needs to be repaired. That is know issue.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

I have the same warning light and srs air bag service warning. It started with a pot hole/bump in the road. I was going to let the dealer look at it. I have an OBD reader/reset tool but it is a hard code. Is this an expensive repair?

Find someone with vida to reset it, it doesn't help you if no one knows where you are and you don't ask for help. It helps to start a new thread too.
