Advice about plug fouling: 240 DL

Post by Kym Faull »

Hi: I am the proud owner of a 1984 240 DL wagon with a four-B21FT(tubo engine). I have owned this vehicle since new and it has 150 K miles. Recently one of the plugs started fouling. Only one plug fouls and at the moment I am not sure how quickly. It was a slightly fouled after 350 miles recently, but had not started to miss. As a consequence of this I have some questions answers to which will be greatly appreciated.

1. Can I use a hotter-running spark plug to minimize the fouling.
2. can I use a denser oil to minimize the fouling. At the moment we have been using grade 15/40.
3. Are oil addatives such as "super slick" advisable in these engines?.
4. Any further advice as to how the plug fouling can be reduced will be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to send a response to my email address: [email protected]

Many thanks for reading this

I think the first order of business would be a compression check. That would allow you to further narrow the possibilities as opposed to trying to mask the problem. Sounds like you have a bad cylinder, just a guess. i would hazard another guess that a head freshing would solve your problem but a compression test would certainly point you in the right direction.
