2002 V70 XC Turbo-replaced PCV system-now won't start

Post by aaron1611 »

I figured I'd start a new thread since I completed the PCV replacement and cleaned the ETM over the weekend. This is not my daily driver yet, so when I got home from work tonight to fire it up since finishing last night it turns over fine and seems to want to start but just won't do it. I've connected everything back the way it was and checked vacuum hoses and it's all good but it just won't start. I checked the fuel rail and it's full and pressurized and I guess I will have to check for spark tomorrow night but is there anything that I could've accidentally done to cause this? Well, I'm sure there is but anything that has happened to others that could be likely?

thanks,

It is easy to misalign the intake manifold gasket causing a no start.

Double check all the vacuum hoses.

Mine took a but of cranking to fire up after the job, maybe a little but of starting fluid will give it a boost from an empty manifold.

Huge vacuum leak or you cleaned the ETM a little too well. Does the ETM still have the 8sec whine with ignition in PosII ?

Take a good look at the ETM connection. Could a contact have gotten pushed back into the connector? Is the connector fully locked onto the ETM?

I haven't gotten back to the house yet but I'm thinking my mistake was when I removed the ETM I didn't replace that gasket, forgot to order it ahead of time and my indie shop was closed. I'm thinking I'm getting unmetered air in and that's why it won't start. I've reused gaskets in the past with no issues but could this be the problem?? I thoroughly cleaned all surfaces before installing the old gasket but it looks like I'm going to have to get back in there. Sux.

well now I don't feel like such an idiot. Sprayed a little bit of starting fluid and it started right up and idles nicely. Problem is that I'm still getting the reduced engine performance command when I go to accelerate, just as before. I'm going to do an oil and filter change this weekend and take it for a longer drive but should I still replace the gasket? I already bought it online so I guess it can't hurt. I guess back to square one on this.

The codes will tell all hopefully. You need to read the car with a diagnostic scanner.

Used the same ETM gasket about 10 times on my T5 and about 150 times on my 2000 V70 (non turbo) as I provide an ETM changeover service and use my cars to test ETMs
Unless you can see a hole in the gasket I wouldn't bother with it.

Mine took about 30 seconds of cranking to restart after the PCV job, that surprised me.

Get a look at th e short term fuel trims to diagnose a leak or smoke test it.

Page 2 of this thread describes how to test this.

Are you purging the air out of the fuel line/rail before trying to start it? I've had everything disconnected that one would for PCV service at one point or another and it always took right off like nothing ever happened.
