1990 240 intermittent spark

Post by biohazrd76 »

I am the new owner of a 240 naturally aspirated that currently has an intermittent spark issue. it had been sitting in a field and not running since 2003!! I have recently brought it back to life with the following parts two fuel pumps a crankshaft position sensor new ignition control module new spark plugs and wires distributor rotor ignition coil also new alternator brushes and replaced the original ECU brakes and starter motor ,fuel pump relay. now I am having an intermittent spark issue and I'm not sure to suspect ignition coil, control unit, or ECU because all are new and known to work..
The car was recently running and driving and cut off very sharply with no start. Any insight??

The terminals in connectors for ign module, ign power stage, and the CKP sensor are all known to get loose contact. First stab fix is to unplug and use dental pick to close in the sides so the tension on male pin is better for better connection. Spray with terminal cleaner spray and then maybe white grease spray before plugging back together. The FI ECU has the same issue. The REAL fix is to replace terminals using the ones Volvo and other sources have now with a backup U shaped spring that keeps sides of terminal loaded inward to assure male pin contact with some pressure.
If you want to know which one is causing then one at a time unplug the connector, spray with WD40 or similar and then plug and unplug 3 times and then crank and run until it dies or until it has run longer than it usually does. If it is a no start then hold in on the connector while someone cranks one at a time until it fires off when you find the offending connection.

Thanks for the reply. Im having more predictable problems now... where the car starts easily when engine is cold and we'll stall after 20 minutes I am replacing the coolant temperature sensor for ECU( 2 pin connector)
