My 1998 V70 currently has the dash squeak only on the left (driver) side. Just touching it very lightly stops all the noise. I am guessing that the firewall attachment point is broken on the far left, but still intact over on the right end. I've read every "how-to" on the internet about fixing this problem.
Question: Is there a hollow air duct for the defroster behind the attachment points?
EDIT: Answer is yes. Sorry. I read so many articles that I lost track of that fact...

Its worth checking if tightening the mounting bolts under the cowl will help, especially on the left side. If it helps it may only be a temporary fix, but a little squeak-free time is better than none.

I would also try to verify that the squeak is coming from your dash (the part mounted to firewall) or the upper dash pad (the top part of dash that comes off easily with a few screws).
I did a dashboard repair this summer :
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=81991&p=444318#p444318
In my case, I didn't have a squeak. I had wild amounts of rattling and occasional cracking sounds as I drove.
There was no doubt in my mind that some number of dash mounts had broken which caused my dash to make all sorts of sounds over and above a squeak. All 4 mount points were shattered.
After my repair, my dash was silent. However, just this morning it developed a minor squeak that I personally think is attributed to the dashpad and the abrupt temperature change here in the NJ/PA area and the fact that I have had to use the heat in the morning.
With my squeak, I can put gentle pressure on the left edge of the dash pad and cause it to stop. When my dash was broken, only massive amounts of pressure would cause it to quiet down.
Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions about my dash repair. It's still fresh in my mind.
