Stuck on Removing Intake Manifold

Post by gspences »

Had to have the ETM serviced on my 2001 XC70 ... decided to go the Xemodex route, and that's currently in transit. I figured this would also be a good time to service the PCV, so have the replacement kit from FCP. The car is new to me so I'm just slowly trying to take care of my top 3 issues - MAF (replaced), ETM, and now PCV. But I'm stuck on removing the intake manifold. (I was able to take the ETM out without removing it.)

I've watched multiple youtubes and reviews some topics here. I've removed 3 top bolts and loosened 2 bottom bolts. I cannot find a 3rd bottom bolt which is often referenced. On the passenger side I've looked/felt all around the end of the manifold up to the thermostat ... cannot find a bolt. Looks to me that the ONLY thing holding the intake now is a small hose from the thermostat to the intake ... I loosened that hose clamp but started dripping antifreeze so I tightened back up.

Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for the assist.

Oh - and if there are any other recommendations on work I should do while I have this disassembled, please chime in.

look behind the edge of the thermostat. This is the tougher one to loosen. I've used one of the little u-joints on a 1/4" extension to reach around the thermostat and get a grip on this bolt. On the hose that starts leaking antifreeze, when I get that one loose I put a foam earplug in it (like you'd use when you go shooting or when working in a loud environment, and that stops most of the leaking.

IdahoBob - Excellent! Thanks for the tip. Hopefully I can find that bolt tomorrow, and I've got plenty of foam plugs. Many thanks.

The bolt under the thermostat is impossible to see and very hard to reach. DO NOT remove it, just loosen it. I did a write up a few years ago and documented how to access that bolt.

Thanks velorider ... I'm learning that all the answers are already here, just sometimes some help needed to find it. Much appreciated. Just now headed out to find that bolt!
