1998 V70 Air Box Thermostat

Post by CEBirnley »

I am looking for guidance on how to remove the thermostat below as well as to the correct catalog number. As you can see, I have the housing apart, however can not understand how to remove the thermostat. I ordered what I thought to be the correct thermostat, but it looks nothing like what mine looks like.

Your guidance is appreciated.

And I understand most folks just block open the valve to the cold side, however I have read concerns about the throttle having freezing issues in cold weather. I drive a tremendous amount of interstate miles during the cold wet winter months. I may be better served by having a functioning thermostat.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Thank you for the link.

I read through those 15 pages previously, they unfortunately did not provide the answers I was looking for, thus my request for information.

Have a great day.

I am closing out this request for information as it appears my solution will be to purchase a new lower box with a different thermostat setup. I cannot locate the type of thermostat I need nor have I found any information on how to remove the thermostat from the type of box my vehicle has installed.

Hard to tell which you have. I have a 00 V70 base and perhaps your car is a late model with the new style airbox and thermostat like mine. I believed there were only 2 variants in the V70 life the 98 and 99-00 P80. Not sure if the 850 is the same. That earlier version you can replace the thermostat for sure.

There was a video on youtube I think that showed how to swap out the thermostat. I will try to remember to look later for it and post it. I have a later one as a spare, and I plan to go to PnP in the next couple of days to pull some stuff. The other PnP just got a 98 NA in so if time allows I could go and see if the airbox is still there but I will have to bring it home to check the thermostat still works.

The bell housing on the back of the thermostat can be pried off, check the picture for a slot to receive a screwdriver. There should be at least 2 or 3 of them. That will let you pull out the works.

Neil and Klaus, upon further review, this is a different type of airbox than mine. This air box thermostat has a cap. Where mine is seated inside and is not of the same style as the one from the video. Thank you though Gentleman.

I think I saw the pictures in the start of the post somewhere else, so are they not of your actual unit? The linked youtube info is for that type.

Is yours like this style?:
Later type NA airbox thermostat
Later type NA airbox thermostat
