Hello all, so last weekend our trusted wagon finally had the navigation system "go out". when I hit the enter button it comes up saying "DVD can not be read". I remember having this issue years ago and did some reset process with the key but I forgot how and I've tried to find it online again but can't. I'll try one last ditch effort today to disconnect battery and see what happens.
My question: is there a way to disable the nav so the buttons don't work or the screen doesn't come up? Now when I hit enter it stays up with this message and every time car is started it does the same with no way to make it go down. I was thinking maybe just disconnecting the system in the back but not sure if that had some unknown consequence. The DVD is 13 years out of date and retiring it might be the best option either way.
thanks!

It doesn't go down when you turn the key off?

Oh yeah it does go down when I turn the car off, but as soon as I turn the car on the display comes up and says it can't play the DVD.... I'm hoping to have it stay down after a battery disconnect, but any curious fingers hitting any nav buttons will probably make it come up, and stay up while key's in.

If you push the center/enter or back button the 'cannot read disk' screen clears into a main menu. There is a shutdown option in the menus. After which the screen won't pop up every time you start the car. Pressing the enter button turns it back on.
Chances are the laser that reads the disk puked. From what I've put together all the Mitsubishi electric hardware disc based nav units (Volvo, MB, Chrysler, etc), from this era burn out their lasers after a certain amount of time.

Either the disc is bad or most likely the unit can't "read" the disc anymore.
These units are not known for their reliability and longevity.
Keep it down and use your phone and WAZE. (or is it WAYS?) If you can't find a way to keep it down, find the correct fuse and pull it!

ok so update: did get it to go down eventually with the menu tip, thanks!
I decided to disable the nav computer by pulling the power to, this also disabled it screen. I will leave computer in there until I get a chance to look at the diagnostics, if there are no codes I might remove it and nail it to my wall of original parts. The sticker on it had a license for "windows CE" so that brought back memories... I guess a windows CE computer running for 15 years tracking 210k miles is no small feat, my phone barely last two years. RIP VNS (at least ours)
