Can I just take a moment to say "Wow"??

Post by oldandbroke »

So, I've had my 2001 V70 NA manual for about 2 weeks now.

I have had my years of hot rodding around - maybe they will come again when I retire, but for now I'm very content to sedately go to and from work and pick my kids up from school.

So I bought this thing, looking at the curb weight and looking at the HP and torque ratings, expecting a nice, boring, really not fun to drive, but long lived car. I had an 84 240GL in the mid nineties, and that's exactly what it was.

I am *amazed* at how much fun this thing is to drive around. I cannot believe that I've got the absolute base model, it's 16 years old, and yet it's this enjoyable.

In a straight line it goes down the highway comfortably. It merges without drama. It overtakes and passes *surprisingly easily* with such a flat seeming torque curve.

It corners - well pretty darn nicely! It certainly doesn't feel as long as it is, turn-in is much quicker than I expected, it corners flatter than I expected, and overall it far exceeds what I would have been happy with for a 16 year old full size wagon.

And while I am not one to push such an old car hard, it just naturally seems to want to open up and go in 2nd and 3rd. I hit the cruise control "resume" in 5th today after the guy front of me moved over, and was surprised at the solid, noticeable pull, on a pretty good hill, from about 65 to 80. This car has enough oomph that I have to admit I kinda enjoy those situations where I need to give it a little extra, but it still doesn't require me to rev to the stratosphere - even when doing a spirited merge I'm very rarely hitting beyond 4K RPMs. At one point I wondered if I'd missed a turbo under the hood. :-)

(And might I point out - all the above is with mud and snow tires on it - because that's what it came with, and that's what's staying on it until spring)

I came from a late 90's Saturn. That car was an absolute miracle - I paid less than $700 for it 5 years ago, put maybe $1200 into it since then, and it got me to and from with no problems - if a careless neighbor hadn't totalled it while it sat in front of my house, I bet I'd have got 5 more years from it, easy.

I respected that car - that it was so reliable and got the job done after nearly 20 years. With what insurance gave me for it, I was very skeptical of finding the same thing again. And while the jury is out on my V70 as far as that kind of thing goes (through no fault of its own), I absolutely did not expect to find something I could actually enjoy for this amount of money. I have owned brand new cars (mid-range domestic brands) that weren't as much a joy to drive as this thing is.

Those of you with newer or higher performance models - well I can imagine that you skip down the sidewalk to get into them every day. I think I'm a Volvo convert now, and this will be my preferred brand going forward. (Though I don't think I'll ever buy one new, unless there's a big windfall in my future.)

Anyway - I really love this thing - and I didn't expect to. I hope everyone is enjoying theirs this much.

We bought our 99 off a new lease as a Mom hauler, filled every seat including third row, with Dad traveling on top. The T4 was the only car that could carry us and gear.

With the intercooler HPT and 5 gears on a stick, it's now my Daily driver.

Volvo bought used 10 years old is the best luxury sport ride out there, I'm convinced.

I tend to agree. I have yet to see another vehicle on the road I'd particularly want instead of my S60 (LPT FWD). I had a short list of make/models in the mid-2000MYs I was considering when I bought the Volvo. If for any reason I got stuck in any of those other vehicles now I would not be happy about it. Closest thing I've seen that might actually tempt me would be a Jaguar. They seem to know what they're doing when it comes to clean stylish sport lux as well. But it would have to be one of the newer ones. I'm not interested in large displacement NA (most if not all of the older Jags).

I concur.
Good luck intervened when I bought my '99. The early bird got the worm but then backed out of the deal.
The '02 I found had more air bags. I kept that one for 9 years.
A year ago I found an '07 which had been well cared for.

All are non-turbo and have been solid, strong, quiet cars. The '99 and '02 sold easily.

It really stinks that Volvo went to the larger engine in '08 and upped the luxury quotient.
As much as I LOVE the car, it simply may be over with my '07 as they "aren't made anymore".

Glad you like yours.

In general Volvo stuck to the 2.5 as the staple engine for the newer models as well until the latest 2.0 engines took over. The US dealer centered way of buying new cars may well have shifted that.

As for luxury I'd rate the P2s about the same as the next generation apart from the development of cars in general during that period. Still "The Car" in Sweden. There's been quite a bit of looking at BMW and jaguar lately though since the new cars are somewhere in between.

These P2 wagons are among the best cars ever made.

I crushed my beloved 2005 XC70 on a Telos Road in Maine around this Thanksgiving.

My skills are right on the spot a lot of employers need and I can get almost any car I want, but guess what I've got 4 days later? Another XC70! Same year, same color. I'm stripping down my well-cared XC70 and in the process of swapping all of drivetrain, undamaged side and even interior into a "new" chassis.

New Volvos unfortunately are not up to the quality standards Swedes had in past (wifie drives '16 XC60). The rest of the brands are even worse.

Seems like they are built to satisfy more than one kind of owner, for sure.

I have to admit that only a concern for gas mileage knocks those kinds of engines out of the running for me. I think I'm *really* going to be an old fart in a few years, as I try harder and harder to stay away from electric cars - fortunately it's easy for now, but I forsee a time where finding a used car that's not ancient and also not electric or hybrid is going to be tough.

Thanks - I really do love it!

What's the reader's digest version of how they went sideways in 08 and up? Too much price hike with the luxury increase, or do you mean soft and squishy? Anything bad about the bigger engine aside from not being the preferred workhorse?

Yikes that's a tragic fate. What's the story there? No injuries I assume?

Out of curiosity, what do you do for a living? And what don't you like about your wife's car?

No injuries, just the car slid off the icy road and hit a rock and some trees. It was able to start and move another 300 miles after unjamming the wheel.

I'm a programmer and my wife is too. Her car is more Ford Edge than Volvo, with somewhat fancier interior. But the FoMoCo quality is there, everything is like 20% worse than it used to. This car won't last as long as a car designed and made in Sweden by Swedes using Swedish (or European) parts. Now all suspiciously looking or rusty parts have FoMoCo or Made in China stamp. New SPA Volvos leak fluid right in the show room. Doh...
