I'm thinking of dropping the pan on my 98 to find out what happened to cylinder #1. I think the piston rod failed but wont know until I drop the pan and look.
So say the #1 piston rod failed. Can I pull out the piston, disable the fuel injector and still drive the car as a 4 cylinder provided the other 4 cylinders are still working OK? I'm kind of curious. CN90 told me that the valves on #1 would be bent (not sure that's a certainty) but if they are and #1 was disabled would it even matter?
Thoughts?

Because it's made to use all five evenly you will get an engine that fires more unevenly than an engine that's supposed to be a four cylinder. The engine will run though but with reduced performance.

Yes - I know. But currently it doesn't run at all. Running with 4 cylinders is an cheap easy way to get an idea if any other damage was done.Rattnalle wrote: 05 Jan 2018, 17:13 Because it's made to use all five evenly you will get an engine that fires more unevenly than an engine that's supposed to be a four cylinder. As long as the block web and crank journals are good. Also pull the plug wire. And I guess it would depend on where and how the rod failed as to whether it would push the piston back to TDC and bend valves. It would sure pass the glove test with a clear hole to scavenge crankcase pressure! -cn90 upstaged. New "ultimate PCV mod"
Current Volvos:

It'll run like crap - but it will run.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Not sure what you mean by this????? It punched a slightly bigger hole (maybe 10% bigger) into the place where oil flows into the oil filter. That's why I didn't originally find it - its all contained - no leaks - not open to the atmosphere. I sent you a PM the other day and didn't hear back from you - maybe you missed it - take a look and please let me know your thoughts.FLXC90 wrote: 05 Jan 2018, 17:49 It would sure pass the glove test with a clear hole to scavenge crankcase pressure! -cn90 upstaged. I'll probably part out the car, but thought that if it runs with no problems on 4 cylinders it might be worth replacing the piston, ring and failed crank rod. I had a head rebuild in mind prior to the melt down since the valve seals leak a good bit. There is a guy in Atlanta who does great work who will overhaul a head for about $350 if you remove it and bring it to him.

Yes, I know the balance will be off by a good bit. I'm thinking of it as a crude test to see if its worth trying to repair. I've grown attached to the car. I've spent more time with it than my wife on weekends the last couple of years. (insert under the hood jokes here if you must) The V70 and I have a special love/hate bond. Plus its got that really cool haight ashbury sticker I bought in SF. You don't see those every day in the ATL.

I would do what abscate adviced you to.....replace the engine and avoid all headaches about what happened.
I don't see the point to scrap the car in which you allready invested more money than replacement engine would cost.
The other solution would be to buy a parts car with good engine....use the engine and then sell other parts.

Good solution if I could find a low miles engine for a few hundred dollars and gt someone to install it for cheap. Looked and didn't find anything. Also I have no desire to do an engine swap myself - zero!. I have too many other projects and not enough time. The quote I got for an engine swap was $1800 plus the cost of the engine. My car is worth $1200 running so the swap makes no sense for memisha wrote: 05 Jan 2018, 18:35 I would do what abscate adviced you to.....replace the engine and avoid all headaches about what happened.
