99% sure I do but it’s a lot of cash so I’d appreciate your expert opinions.
The ETC light was on intermittently for around 2-3 months after I bought the car with no symptoms I could notice. Then about 2 months ago it went out and hasn’t come back on. I planned on doing the Xemodex thing and just never had a few days to go without a car and mail it in.
Then starting 2 months ago the light went out and has not come back on.
Recently the car started occasionally dying if I switch from reverse to drive backing out of my driveway, especially when the car hasn’t warmed up yet. Starts right back up, but it can be kind of embarrassing if you’re out somewhere.
Normal driving with stop signs and such are no issue.
Does this sound like I need an ETM?

Possible, sure. Likely, I do not believe so.

How many miles ago did you last service the transmission and crankcase?

I just changed the oil 1500 miles ago. That didn’t effect this issue.
It does need a tranny fluid exchange, just based on how the fluid looks. Not terrible but definitely a reddish brown as opposed to just red. Just got the right funnel from IPD (old one got lost) and I was planning on doing three drain and fills over the next couple weeks.
If I blip the throttle as the car is popping into drive from reverse it won’t shut off. Which made me think this could be an IAC issue. But then I was reading where there is no IAC on the ETM cars so assuming the throttle handles that issue

While the ETM cars don't have a traditional IAC, there is an idle control of sorts in the intake hose. (At least on N/A cars) The device is fitted into the air inlet just upstream of the ATM, fitted with a grommet.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

My plan for now I guess will just be to see if it improves with the tranny drain and fills. It’s not a huge deal, this is just my first 99+ Volvo so I thought maybe it was a clear ETM issue.
Thanks again for the input so I didn’t blow a load of cash on an ETM that probably hasn’t failed yet.

I'm thinking an air/vac leak between MAF and intake manifold... When the car goes into drive, the motor will move just a smidge. You could try disconnecting the MAF to test my theory. Also double check the motor grounds are intact, just in case...
