V70 gremlins

Post by Theshagginwagon »

I recently began having issues with my 2004 v70 2.5t. It seems to have somewhat of a pattern. Not always but sometimes. Starts out with an anti skid service required with the amber triangle. Once the engine starts it promptly dies and will not restart. If I leave it off with the hood open for a bit it will sometimes start back up but it will have the engine service required light ( amber triangle) and sometimes the transmission service required light as well. When this happens the engine and trans works fine. Any ideas what it could be. I did manage to get 2 codes from it but I do t have them with me at the moment.

You start by isolating a no start into either fuel or ignition systems. Your fault codes will start that process. If the car has missed it standard set of maintenance items, it probably has multiple faults, so that changes the approach and makes it more difficult.

The failure pattern is too vague to be much use in troubleshooting. A bad wheel sensor willtrip a trans code but will have nothing to do with a no start, for example.

I would also look at the CEM (google up). Maybe also measure the voltage at the battery

That 05xx code is a climate fault you can ignore for now.

The 06xx code is a comm link error - how old is the battery on this car?

Try clearing them and see if they come back

I am unsure how old the battery is. It is a volvo battery. I did a voltage test while sitting in my driveway before cranking and during. Battery tested well. I will have it tested this week. I also got 8 more codes today when it stranded me at my friends house. The codes are p0863, p0503, 00073,p0571,p0600

Update, had the battery and alternator tested and they both passed with flying colors.

Hmmm, that is multiple code link errors between speed sensors and TCM

It might be worth breaking-remaking the connections to each of these components ( use google with code to find these, them images to locate them) Andy then d3cide if you want to be gutsy and remove reseat the TCU, too

There is a tool for that although it’s possible without the tool if you have good dexterity

The only time I saw anti-skid warnings on my 2004 v70, it preceded a wide range of faults and warning lights, and was solved by removing the metal RFI shield from the CEM circuit board, and (perhaps overkill) adding heat sinks to both of the chips that are said to overheat in the CEM. As the heat sinks are cheap, I also did the same with the REM, despite having no faults associated with it.

This process not without risk for the inexperienced - one wants to photograph the locations of the CEM relays and mark each relay, paying careful attention to the proper plug-in location for each. Getting the CEM in and out of its clips is also a puzzle for many, but it will make more sense if you look at the mounting bracket once the CEM has been removed.

As this is a "zero parts cost" fix, and is easily reversible without any damage, it may be worth trying if you have a spare half hour.

2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

Any particular kind of heat sink, if so could you provide a link or info to acquire one. Side note: took my car to the mechanic, he could not repeat the problem (of course lol) said he loves driving it.
