Fuel filter location - 2008 XC70
I have a 2008 XC70 and am getting a P0190 code intermittently which indicates that I probably have a partially clogged fuel filter. I cannot find the fuel filter. I even purchased a service manual, downloaded it and it was not any help in locating the fuel filter. I have searched online and at the local parts houses and no one seems to have access to a fuel filter to fit this vehicle. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Fuel filter is now an integrated part of the fuel pump. If it were me I would change the fuel pressure sensor that should be located on the fuel rail of the engine where the injectors come off.

As above, if you still replace the pump, don't discard it as it may actually be good and the problem may be elsewhere. Ask the mechanic to keep it. These intank filters last forever. Plus, there's a secondary filter before the actual filter, the chances to get clogged are slim.

Thanks guys, I will replace the fuel pressure sensor first and see if that stops the error code. Could the pressure sensor cause the engine to misfire? I have noticed that I usually get a couple of misfires just before the check engine light comes on. After driving for a day or so the check engine light clears and no other misfires for several days. Thanks again.

There are sources selling the inside the tank mounted fuel filter. You remove the fuel pump and then follow the accordioned line to the filter. The filter is held by a plastic flexible strap that you unhook and then pull the filter into the opening. The other line on filter is not long enough to get it out of the tank. The filter has quick connect fittings and you depress a square button on the fitting in order for the connection to release. The original filter is plastic but the Hengst brand I have been able to find is a metal filter part number H490WK. It has been years since I changed one. The one I changed was not the problem and that car got a PEM as I recall. There was a connection problem and early in the experience it would only cut out on full throttle runs and set low fuel pressure code. After the filter was changed it continued and the signal would go much too high at idle and the connection at PEM had gotten the terminals heated enough to partly melt the connector body with further use. It is certainly possible to get bad fuel and filter to stop up but I have not seen gasoline engine cars needing fuel filters in many years. The mesh pre-filter used by almost all brands does a great job of stopping casual impurities and keeping them in tank. If you get a big dose of water then that mesh gets completely covered and some water may pass. Normally it rejects small amounts of water. I am not sure about the condition of fuel in Germany but fuel issues in US for that few years is more about having too much alcohol in fuel from supplier. I see very clean fuel tanks on cars and trucks with 200,000 miles when I drop the fuel tank and remove the fuel pump when those fail. It is rare for me to find anything in tank to clean out. The fuel filter after the fuel pump in line up to engine usually only has black and copper dust from electric motor brushes in fuel pump.

Thanks jimmy57 for your detailed information. Since I have the same symtoms as rfwnc had I will change the fuel pressure sensor. Or do you recommend somthing else?

For anyone experiencing the misfire issues, I changed the sensor out and it fixed it as well as the code/light.

To quiglysam1: Which engine do you have in your 2008 XC70?
(I assume that's the vehicle you're referring to in your post)
