850 air conditioner compressor question

Post by Lineman1954 »

After pulling engine and transmission for a clutch change, the one connection I can not find or figure out is the double black wires in a black plastic sheath going to the rear bottom of the compressor. the small single gray wire on the upper front and its mate have been joined. I cant find where these round connections should go ! there are no mates for these 2 in the main loom... after a few solid hours of googling this question under a variety of searches, I'm asking for anyones help who knows. Thanks for any help.

I think what you are describing is the compressor thermostat. It is typically in series with one of the control wires to the compressor.

I've seen a bunch of them where it was simply bypassed.

Lee, sir, when you say bypassed, do you mean left hanging unplugged, or crimped together to complete the circuit ?..... and if you know, where are those 2 wires supposed to go ?......... there is a similar single wire "brown" round connector going into the block nearby....I was wondering if that wire was supposed to go into one of these, then the remaining wire from the compressor would go into the round connector where the "brown" wire was into the block....a series circuit ?

In many cases the thermostat had "bullet" connectors, one male and one female. The bypass was accomplished by running the wire directly to the compressor rather than being looped through the thermostat and as a result the thermostat wires were just unplugged and dangling. The thermostat operated in a normally closed fashion and only opened at some specified temperature. It was like a light switch that was usually on. The wire colors from the devices on the car are pretty meaningless since the wire colors on the component side of the connector are never called out on the schematics. I think they were subject to wide variations based on the component supplier.

If you can snap a picture of what you have and post it back it would help us nail it down.

I'm very grateful for your comments Lee, I have a picture taken from my cell, looking for the way to post, however, since I didnt pay a lot of attention to those wires, and did NOT remove the compressor when I pulled the engine trans. my feeling is they were hanging there right along.
