2013 rear brakes- Need Advice

Post by Trackmom »

Hi, I need to replace the pads n rotors on the rear brakes. The dealer is charging me $700 and my friend said he can do it for much much less. I’m buying the parts from the dealer but just wondering if there’s anything else he needs. He was concerned that there were electrical components in the rear but he found that there’s not. Is this correct? Is there a kit that I need to buy or just pads n rotors? I was online shopping and some kits were available that included other stuff but I’m not sure if I need it. Thanks for your help!

I think your XC may have the electronic parking brakes, so they can be done either with VIDA DICE or by hand. If it does, then it will match the video. If not, then it is pretty straightforward. Here is a good video on the by hand process. Might look into replacing the parking brake shoes while you are in there. Also, if you are looking to get the Volvo Dealer parts, then they can be had for less here: http://volvopartslisle.com/catalog/2013 ... s-Diagrams

And actually, this guy has a ton of good vids...

Don't the late P2 XC90s have the same mechanical handbrake as the early ones? If there's a regular stick to pull inside the car there are no electronics and just pads and discs will be fine. You don't really need to get them at Volvo unless you think it's a decent deal there.

But do get some slide pin grease so you can clean and relube them slide pins while you're pulling it all apart.

Yeah, looking like it's not the electric parking brakes.

Thanks for your help. I called the dealer and it looks like it will be $320 plus tax for rear rotors and pad kit. Is there somewhere else that’s reliable to purchase?

Wanderdune, I tried the link you attached to Lisle Volvo and they were about $15 less than the price from other dealer.

Then your dealer has good prices.

You could look at FCP euro, they are a 100% good and reliable source. Here's one kit they have, there are other brands, but for the most part, Volvo brand is best for brakes on the XC90. Not sure who makes them for Volvo, maybe someone on here knows and will post that.

Note: I know that the front rotors can be different sizes, but I think the rears are all one size. If you call fcp, they will know.

Looks like there is a link to FCP on the home page of this forum. Don't know if it helps MVS to click that, but go through there just in caseit does if you buy from them.

Trackmom - I don't have any interest in FCP other than a really happy customer, but if you do go that route, you get lifetime warranty on parts if you can keep your paperwork straight.

Just ask us which brands you'll are looking at to see if they are decent quality or not. Several are close or equal or even better than what Volvo is selling and basically there is little chance you'll get a higher price for any of these.
