1994 850 NA wandering idle

Post by GlennG2759 »

I have '94 850 NA with wandering idle and erratic hard start. I did the complete pvc job, cleaned TB, MAF, IAC, fuel injectors w/ new prongs, new thermostat, ECT sensor, and full tune-up. Idles wanders from 750-100 rpm.
Also cleaned egr valve and intake manifold. When I turn key on I can hear fuel pump. The car will always eventually start, buts seems to load up until I rev it a couple of time. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Fuel pump or relay possibly? Thanks much, great site!

Have you checked the fuel pump pressure? It should be around 43psi.

What brand of parts have you used? The reason is these cars are very particular on the brands they like. The ECT has to be OE or Vernet to work. Also check the wiring to the ECT where the plug is on the power steering pump. It often gets crusty and fragile with age. Also check the wiring on the relays on the top of the radiator for the same issues.

PCV kit from FCP, ECT from Intermotor, Volvo tuneup parts, will check fuel pressure at rail. If it low that would mean fuel pump correct? This is a project car I recently purchased and has approx 172,000 miles on it. I have no error codes (1-1-1) on A2 & A6 diagnostic ports. Thanks for you input, Glenn G.

That's a BIG problem.
The only way to go with is OE Volvo or at least Vernet.

After rechecking all my vacuum lines, I pulled one off fuel pressure regulator and fuel came out. That no good ! Replaced regulator low and behold smooth idle. PROBLEM SOLVED. I appreciate your input. Thanks

You are on borrowed time with Intermotor ECT.
All sensors or modules from that brand are out of spec from the factory.
Your call.

What happened with your old ECT?
I never heard that one failed yet....mine is still original.
The problem is in the connector pins and it's wiring.
If your old one is original....you can put it back.

I guess it hasn't but wires were in pretty bad shape. I thought it pretty cool that you easily take the connector wire housing apart so you could slip a box end wrench on the sensor to tighten. I still have it will try to repair wires in free time.

Clean your MAF sensor completely (Bosch only). Check vacuum leaks at the manifold, valve body...
