Rear Passenger window stuck down

Post by Kmoran3001 »

So I bought a 2000 V70 this March and after I got it I tried putting the rear passenger window down and it went down but will not go back up. The motor makes a noise if I try to put it down more but nothing happened when I try to put it up, I have tried to move switches that work and that doesnt work, I have also tried to remove the regulator just to prop the window up just so I can take the trash bag off but I cannot remove both pins from the rail on the bottom of the window because the regulator itself is in the way. If anyone has any info that could help me it would be very appreciated. Also any questions please ask I'm not sure what information to include with this.

The usual issue is the master window switch on the driver's door fails with age. You can usually pick one from a junkyard to swap out which is fairly easy.

I know there is a way to get the wind back up but personally don't know how. It will probably require removing the master switch and shorting two connectors on the connector to get the window back up.

There is a manual method to crank the window back up. If you look at the motor there is typically a sticker over the center of the gearbox on the motor assembly. If you remove the sticker it will reveal a hex socket (I think it is hex but it might be a Torx) but if you put the appropriate hex or torx wrench into that socket you can crank it back up. Sorry, I can't remember the correct size.

The temps have swing from 80s into 40s in 48 hours. I rolled down the front passenger window for fresh air. It is halfway down, goes down but not up, stuck!

Lee, is the manual method accessible from the inside the door, i.e. remove this panel #1?

Yes, you can get to the motor by removing the interior door panel. The manual crank socket usually has a sticker on it which you can either peel off or just punch a hole in it.

Thank you!
Removed the panel and unbolted the motor assembly. Then move the window all the way up manually.

Wired back the motor to check, the center console switch only turns the gear one way (downward). Is it switch or motor? I could swap it with passenger rear door motor to find out.

Your thought?

Switch most likely. Electrically if motor operates going down, it typically should go up as well from the motor end of things. You can verify this with a multimeter if need be.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

If it goes down, but not up, and assuming that
there’s no mechanical issue like a loose track
or window glass, there’s no need to pull door
panels on a P80 to get the window back up.

The motors on most cars, including these, just
need reversed polarity to go up or down. Since
the motors are fed by the window switches, all
you need to know is which two wires to apply
power to when you unplug the correct switch.

On an S/V70, it’s the master switch pack for
the driver’s window and the local door switch
for the other three. Download wiring diagrams
to find the right wires.

On an 850, the master switch connector gets the
two front windows and the door switches provide
access to the rear window motor wires.

Just be sure that the switches are unplugged,
so that the window motor wires are completely
disconnected from any grounds provided by
the switches in their “at rest” positions.

It takes about an hour to remove the panel, the motor, pull the glass back up, and put it all back together nicely.
Postponing this repair since I'm the only daily driver. However, I have unplugged the power supply to the motor to help anxious finger mistakingly do it again.

I know this car too well to give up -- separation anxiety.

Thank you for your help.
