Unknow Noise!!! 94 850 sedan...

Hello!! I am new here.

I just got an 850 turbo from my mother, which she bought used in July of this year.
It has 197 thousand and some change on it. My first question or I should say minor (I hope) issue is, when u start it up there is this noise, at first thought it sounds like the power steering pump, My mother took it to a guy (I will not call him a mechanic after what he did) and he told her it was the power steering pump, put a new one on and took her money. The noise is still there. The best way to describe this noise is a cross between the noise from a power steering pump low on fluid (any old school car) and the sound of a manual transmission in reverse. I had five different people listen to the offending noise and give me there opinion as to what is causing it.

Turbo
Alternator/generator
Serpentine belt
A/C compressor
The big pulley behind the p/s pump

Is any one out there familiar with this? I have some more questions but I will wait

I have a 95 Turbo with 141k and change and it makes the same noise at startup. I haven't thought of looking into it yet because usually after the engine warms up the noise ceases. I always attributed it to the fact that the car is 11 years old and needs to warm up a bit.
I have to do a bit of detailed maintenance on the car over the next couple of months (belt replacement, hose replacement, oil trap replacement, etc. etc.).
Maybe we'll be able to shed light on the subject...

Just out of curiosity... Have you checked out the 1995 850-Series Service Manual yet? (I am going to look there now for any info regarding your issue.) If you haven't yet, download it. Even though your car is a 94 this manual will still be pertinant and can serve as a very invaluable tool in troubleshooting/solving problems. In fact, if I remember correctly there are whole reports on troubleshooting mysterious noises.
Anyway, MadeInJapan is probably THE most helpful person here or on any Volvo board and has posted this manual for all to see, so make sure to download it and don't forget to thank him!

Bill, The noise is constant, it rises and falls with the engine rpm (chnges pitch)

My first check would be the serpentine belt to ensure it is not starting to break up.

Can you advise me what to look for since i have nothing to compare, plus i'm a newbie at this stuff, since i never experience a broken one not on a car any way but that is a different story.

If you removed the serpentine belt and start the engine for 15 seconds and the noise is gone ,now you have narrowed down what the problem is.

This tells you how to remove the serpentine belt and, of course, replace it. It is not a hard job, but it is awkward because of the lack of space.

If you go down this road give the belt a thorough examination for wear/cracking. If it looks at all dodgy replace it, whether or not that is the problem.

One other thing you could try before removing the belt - start the engine and pour about a quarter of a pint of water on to the belt to see if that stops the squeak. It has worked for me on other cars in the past.

removing the belt is the first part of the process i would imagine.

my first choice would be to check the could be your belt tensioner or the roller/aux. pulley. Cheaper to replace than the next group of options.

Try spinning these and see what type of noise you get from them.

The other options would be your power steering, compressor if equipped with a/c or even a bad bearing on your alternator.

one of the suppliers of parts has this belt tensioner just on their hope page so i list it for reference.

look at the bottom left and you will see a diagram showing all the pulleys on your engine. (although it looks like it in reverse..is it european?)
