PCV hose and EZ-Coils

Post by BlackBrick »

Redoing my PCV system on a 97 850, and am going with 5/8" Fuel Hose between oil box and PTC.

I like the way these Goodyear EZ-coils work for 90 degree bends. Anybody else have luck with them for PCV hoses?

That looks like a very good move. Maybe the fuel hose you used is sturdy enough to not need the coil, but why not be sure. Moreover, anyone using cheap heater hose in this application should definitely take this advice, makes the whole job easier to get done right.

Great idea. Someone else was talking about a similar type repair on the hoses on their carbon canister under the front LH fender.

4 1/2 years ago I did this job with heater hose. Back then, most said it would be fine. Sure enough, this 90 degree bend was spongy, collapsed, and clogged. NOW using fuel line. And you're right, the EZ coil is added insurance.

I bet it is fine when new, but 50,000 miles of oil vapor is really rough on the rubber, and it just loses is strength.

I would sure pick hose/coils over the tantalizingly cheap aftermarket PVC kits though.

5/8 90 degree barb ends works fine.
Parker also sell push lok 5/8 that is rated for 250psi and oil.

The heater hose can collapse at the bend when new, too, for example if you accidentally smush it when installing the intake manifold. I still maintain it's just not a good idea to use raw, cheap heater hose on the PCV. At least use a 90 degree preformed bend if you are going the heater hose route. And be prepared for it to rot, as in ...

I didn't !!! Anyway, again I say smart move on your part. Thanks for posting up the results of the 4 year experiment, too.

tryingbe's solutions are a proven, sensible way to do it too.

Bit of a follow up, car gave me a code 505 day after pcv work. Idle issue. Car def feels like there is a big vacuum leak. I double checked my work, all look good. But I think I drilled out the PTC hole for vacuum line too much. The vacuum hose to the PTC is just too much vacuum now. Will have to pick up used PTC with original pinhole and see if that works.

Maybe, or maybe not. When last servicing the PTC on my 98 V70, maybe 18 months ago, I completely removed the copper plate with the PTC hole. Just popped it right off so the connection is wide open. The car idles and runs well. It also has a DIY PCV setup. But no fancy EZ coil, alas.

I tried google, saw this: https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-v70 ... ode-20368/

I'd definitely look carefully at the IM gasket, too. Let us know what you find!

I've successfully done IM gaskets so many times, I doubt it's that. When I just half kink the vacuum hose to ptc, the idle goes way down. Kink it all the way, and it almost stalls. I have a 1/4" fuel line connecting for vacuum. I will get a used PTC this weekend and try. I also messed around with throttle linkage and throttle body, will double check that the throttle valve isn't open a bit at idle. May have connected the cable up too tight when hooking it back up.
