How Do You Remove & Re-Seal the Oil Pan/Sump?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

How Do You Remove & Re-Seal the Oil Pan/Sump?

Post by firstvolvo »

My 99 S80 T6 has a very annoying oil leak coming from the corner of the pan that aside from leaving some ghastly stains on my driveway, has also gotten the bottom carriage all wet and it's starting to smell bad after driving for a while.

Upon lifting the car, it looks rather straight-forward to just unbolt the pan and drop it. After reading VADIS instructions though, they recommend bracing the engine from the top and practically dismantling the whole front suspension (including holding the struts together with tie-down straps). Also, I don't know if I can use aluminum silicone, hylomar, or whether I should buy their special $30 adhesive and application roller.

Anyone know what the best, quickest and least painful procedure is? All replies appreciated in advance.
Nathan

You can use the dealer stuff, or "black" oil resistant silicone. Not sure on the process for the T6 as I haven't dropped the pan on mine yet. Are you 100% sure the leak is from the pan and not from the turbo oil return orings?

The easiest way short of removing the engine would be to get an engine support brace that straddles the strut towers (or an engine crane). Support the engine/transmission from above. Lower the subframe. Remove the pan.

I haven't done it yet, but I can't see you having to lower the subframe enough to require anything more than undoing the ball joints. Even then, that might not be required either.

Could have just googled it as well:

Here is a description of how to pull the oil pan.

For 2000 S80 T6
There is a diagram of the oil pan and parts at http://www.volvopartswebstore.com

And there is a diagram, also at http://www.volvopartswebstore.com, of the engine mounting hardware.

Hello,

If it helps, here's a pic of my home made engine support bracket (I've pulled out the gearbox on mine but will do the sump and o-rings at the same time):

Nice rig - thanks for the photo! It helps.

Here is a link to a thread with photos and details on Permatex/Loctite 518 and its application to seal oil pan. That thread says, 'the anaerobic sealant is expensive - I spent many hours searching alternatives and found what's in the dealer's tube - Loctite 518 packaged in a Volvo tube.' I'd done my own research before finding that post and had decided that the 518 would be a good replacement for the Volvo version. (The 518 web page with general specs here).
