Be sure to check what type of transmission fluid you need-- the normally-aspirated cars have the 5 sp auto, the turbo still has the 4 sp (unless the car is an R model). The 5 sp needs JWS-3309 compliant fluid, which includes Toyota IV fluid, which is much cheaper.

The stick is tiny and yellow and is pretty well concealed by things above it.

Dipstick is hidden under the wiring harness below the air intake snorkel. Remove the snorkel at the right side of radiator (when viewed from the front of the car) to the air box. Then look down the side of the radiator and you will see the wiring harness running diagonally to under the radiator. Beneath that you will see a short yellow dipstick. It is held in by a spring clip which you need to push back to remove.

You fill oil through the dipstick hole. I use a clear plastic tube attached to a small funnel and it needs to be filled slowly.

Check oil when transmission is hot only. cold reading is not very accurate.

Be careful with the dipstick as the get brittle with age. I broke mine and had a devil of a job fishing the remainder out of the hole!

I am assuming like the guys said it is a non-turbo model (base/NA) with the 5-speed. If it is an 'R' it is a challenge to get too as you have the turbo pipework in the way.

Neil.

Worth also noting that it needs to checked with the engine running, on a level surface. I agree with checking it hot.
