P0016 error code

Post by Mike Langlois »

I just cleaned up a motor re-seal and timing belt issues on a 2002 V70 X/C 2.4 T and now have a P0016 code: crank sensor/ cam sensor out of range. I put the cam sensor back on correctly and the connection looks good. Has anyone dealt with error P0016 before. I have made only initial looks at it.

This error is a pain. This error indicates locked CVVT hub. This happens sometimes with dirty oil. If you weren't playing with timing, then I'd recommend a oil flush and cleaning oil ports in CVVT Solenoid on top of engine.

Possibilities:
dirty oil
CVVT hub
CVVT Solenoid
Cam sensor
timing belt off by 1 tooth

Thank you for the Information! The CVVT hub moves freely, but I know the previous owner is oil ignorant; levels and quality. I will clean up the solenoid after running a complete engine flush and switch over to high quality synthetic oil. Do you know where the crankshaft position sensor is located; it is rumored that it may be involved also...

I haven’t heard of that possibility. If crankshaft sensor is bad, usually car doesn’t start. I believe (but not sure for your model) that it is on transmission bell housing close to cylinder head.

From what I read, P0016 watches the crank and cam positions and is seeing something out of range. Cautioned to verify wiring integrity and connections before testing/replacing sensors; repeatedly. This is all new to me, but I see why VIDA is important; it allows you to "freeze frame" sensor data and look for anomalies. Lot of big words I barely understand! Thanks for the sensor position, off to check the wiring...

That makes sense. The way I understood it is that solenoid adjusts timing by adjusting oil to CVVT. The computer verifies timing by checking the cam sensor. The piece I didn’t think through was that it likely compares cam sensor to crank sensor to compute relative positions for determining this timing.

Does the car run okay besides this error? If so, I would still guess that crankshaft sensor is okay else you would have drivability issues.

Engine starts and runs fine. I am going to flush engine oil, convert oil to synthetic, flush fuel system. get the crank holding tool then clean the CVVT solenoid and reinstall the timing belt. After checking wiring to the cam and crank position sensors, I will start it up, clear the codes then pray...

You are also in for a pcv job on these engines

To check the vvt solenoid, drive until engine fully hot, then wire the solenoid to the alternator red cable and a second wire to the solenoid housing (ground). Listen for a faint cliick like at 2:00

As for the hub, synthetic oil will hardly help (keep a daily oil level check when you switch to synthetic). I'm in the process on evaluating a jammed vvt hub as well (but no codes)

What I alluded to in my 1st post, but didn’t make clear is that ...

Root cause for every instance on forum that I saw who had this issue immediately after doing timing belt was due to being 1 tooth off. Car still drives fine. Please report back on your findings.

I researched the timing belt procedure again last night (as I think the belt may be off). Decided to get the crank holding tool before tackling this again. Had a similar issue with a Mitsubishi Galant when a good mechanic replaced the timing belt; it does not work on that car if you don't hold a balancing shaft in place; just like the crank holding tool works on the Volvo. Thank you all for your advice; If you helped and have a V70 (2002), I am picking up 2 V70's as parts cars and will be happy to donate parts...
