VIDA DICE Purchase

Post by PoppySheaf »

Top of the morning folks!

Just purchased a 2008 XC90 - 3.2L - AWD - 114k miles.

Been working on all makes of cars, domestic and foreign, for 50+ years and have repaired/replaced just about everything. However, I'm new to Volvo.

Also new to MVS. Pretty good with computer technology. Got some minor issues to resolve on the vehicle including a potential major one with the AW TF-80SC tranny with the infamous shudder between 2-3 and 3-4. Valve body vs. Torque Converter.

Before I dive into all this, I need to purchase VIDA - DICE at a reasonable cost and don't know where to start. I researched it and watched how it works on YouTube and looks like something I could navigate and quickly learn. So many versions, knockoffs, copies, etc. on the net.

First decision, do I find an old computer with Win 7 on it or go for the VIDA2014 Repack as all our laptops and PC at the house have WIN 10 on them? Looks like a lot of hoops and potential issues with the Repack.

I believe I've seen Bluetooth/wireless versions of the VICE connection to the laptop? Are they easy to implement and use?

Second, once I purchase one of these, is the install simple or are their other items I need to install to accommodate the VIDA install?

Thanks for your help my friends and Happy Holidays.

Great Grandpa in Ohio!

You got that backwards, the 2014D_RePack will give the least number of issues. Most likely you been reading through all the things one need to do before the RePack.

The Repack on a Windows 10 machine is the easiest route to a working VIDA install. Follow the 2014D_RePack instructions located here.

The genuine DiCE Bluetooth requires a specific Bluetooth adapter on the PC, which is very rare. I suggest you do not plan on using a Bluetooth connection. I have no memory of anybody that has got the Bluetooth connection working on a DiCE clone.

You can get DiCE clones on eBay, this is what just about everybody uses for DIY Volvo diagnostics. Make sure you get a Full Chip DiCE clone that has a J2534 interface that can do programing. You won't be able to do software upgrades but your be able to change parameters in the software that is installed in the car.

I have purchased my vida dice clone on Amazon, purchased it backed with a return option. No issues sofar. One readout at a Volvo shop is more.
I also purchased from 1moretech through Ebay a complete vida install. It works with a Virtual machine on a Window 10 computer. I do highly recommend this. Up and running in 2 hours depending on your download speed.
Good luck!

Adding another data point, I have VIDA running on a regular Windows 10 laptop. It was a little fussy to get installed and running, and sometimes Microsoft pushes an update that breaks it, but that hasn't happened in a while, and it's been pretty stable. I also have a DiCE which I use with a regular USB connection, and it works nicely both on my 2002 V70 and my 2005 XC90.

For reference, the best installation help I have found is on SwedeSpeed, here: https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... ows-10-Pro

Good luck!
