Windshield washer nozzle replacement

Post by fcth »

Stupid question here: The windshield washer nozzles on my '06 S60 have been broken since I got it (3 of the 4 little tabs that hold them down to the hood have broken off.) Replacements were cheap, so I picked up a couple of the OEM units:

What's making me cautious here is that little bit of hosing attached to the nozzle. Should I just pull it off, pull off the old nozzle (neither seems like they want to budge, but presumably with enough force and something to pry the hose off of the barbs it can be done) and then jam the new one in? Or am I supposed to just cut off the old tubing near the nozzle and then join the old tubing to the new via some other double-barbed thing? Anyone done this before? I haven't found instructions anywhere, but it doesn't really seem like it could be that complicated.

Thanks for any advice!

How does the hose attach in your car? Horizontally or vertically ? Try first detaching it from your car see how it fits. If I'm not wrong, on the new one even a small vertical piece can be detached

It's just as you see above. A hose coming out horizontally from the nozzle (that's the case on both old and new).

Then just twist & unplug the small section of the hose and should be fine

Following up. The passenger side worked pretty well, took some effort to get the hose off of the new nozzle, but it came off. The existing passenger side nozzle came off easily. Things were a little rougher on the driver's side. The new hose tore coming off of the new nozzle, and the old nozzle broke off at the barb. Luckily there was enough slack to just cut off hose with the remaining portion of the barb. Got the new one fitted into the old hose, and everything snapped in securely and is spraying nicely, with no visible signs of leaking fluid.

Nicely done. The hoses are hard to remove when cold, I prefer warming up the engine. I have to say, when working properly, these spray nozzle are perhaps the best in the industry: spray uniformly over a large windshield area and in little quantity just enough to leave a clean windshield without wasting fluid. Realy a teriffic and simple design. I've seen other cars with quite more complex designs and much less efficient while wasting lots of fluid.

Wonder what brand everyone is using...
- Volvo Genuine $13-$15
- PPS brand (Rmeuropean) ~ $2 to $3

Money is not an issue here but I wonder what the feedback is...

Can't help on the aftermarket on(it is PPS after all). For the relatively small outlay, this is one of the parts while still expensive for what it is, is worth it. I swapped the P80's out for the P2 version as they are so much better. They last a long time so buy once and buy well!

I am posting a random photo so ppl can see...

I am thinking this "quick" fix...basically use a vacuum hose with I.D. being same as O.D. of the stem of the nozzle.
Then cut a piece about 1/2 inches long, slit it longitudinally and slide it over the stem of nozzle.

This should be permanent fix.

What do you think?

PS: will try it later this week.

Relatively cheap on time, and little money. You could zip-tie the cut piece to see if the idea works. I have tried to pull spares from the junkyard, but so far always seem to be a klutz and break one retainer off. Next visit, I will take a longer pair of needle nose pliers to try to extract a couple for the stash.
