P2 serpentine belt field removal

Post by abscate »

Just an observation

We were able to remove the serp belt on eshowells R using a tiller stick, about one meter in length, prying gently on the idler tensioner pulley to the rear of the car, then slipping the belt off the PS pump.

We were not able to reinstall with the same method as the stick pins the belt on the pulley and prevents slack on the short leg.

Any stout stick would work if you are in the field, an AC , alt, or PS bearing goes, and you are close enough to drive home on battery ( maybe 30 minutes ?)

Don't lever on the AC hard lines..expensive.

Edited to correct pulley name

Is this the tensioner model that needs that tool with a torx bit to release the tension? I think on 2001-2003 a thin head ratchet with a 14mm socket can be used on the center bolt which makes things easier.

Different brand tensioners use different methods as well. OE is torx though. Center bolt will still work I think.

However if the objective is to survive home and then do repairs one might as well just cut the belt.

Lug nut wrench would work as lever

My 1999 has a 14 mm hex, my P2 a Torx 45?

Cut a perfectly good SERP belt? Perish the thought....
