I have a 2006 xc90 in need to replace an intake hub. I'm not familiar with Volvo cars. I'd like to know what it is and what would cause it to worn before it's designed lifespan (driving style?.. etc). The car currently is close to 100,000 miles.
Thank you for your help!

The intake hub is also known as the Intake VVT hub (Variable Valve Timing). It sits on the front of the intake cam and varieties the valve timing per conditions. The biggest killer of VVT hubs is contaminated oil or low grade oil. Using cheap oil, wrong oil and/or not changing it often enough.

VVT pulley/hub, PN 8642284 I have one of these in my garage, bought right after I had to replace my exhaust hub some years back due to a seal leak (worn, too much in/out play). In my case the issue was exacerbated by an idiotic attempt to run the revs high in an effort to get some air bubbles out of my power steering lines a few days after a rack replacement. Front of the engine started leaking, replaced the seal, it leaked again. Write-up here, just for a point of reference- https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... -2005-2-5T
Might be good to ask the folks fixing your car exactly why they suggest replacing this part.
