Serial number problems.. SOS

Post by Mountainman45 »

So I've posted a few times on here about various questions I've had concerning my engine repairs on a P2 v70 T5. And I'm starting to feel very dumb as it feels like I'm asking the questions that I should already have the answers to, but alas, here goes:

The question today is regarding the engine itself... The car is a 2003 T5. The chassis and transmission are original but from what my service records indicate the engine was swapped about 80k ago with a different turbocharged engine (I was told it was an '05 but now I'm not sure). The only reason I was told it was an '05 was because the thermostat housing was different from the original t5 engine.(square vs round??)

I've been trying to check and recheck my specs to make sure I'm buying the correct parts the first time around and I'm running into issues. My engine code is B5234T3 and the serial# is 9056419.

As you may or may not know, FCPEuro has a great feature where you can plug in your vehicles year, model, submodel, and engine to make sure you have the right part fitment.
I plugged in what I thought was the correct engine year(2005) and the submodel (T5) but it showed me as having a slightly different engine code(B5244T5).

Now I know from doing a little research my engine code designates mine as the 2.3L turbo but nobody seems to have parts for THAT engine specifically. I have to know what parts I can use because I'm replacing the head gasket and possibly the head itself if I find it's been warped!

Unfortunately, an engine swap whether it be new or used, is not in my budget and if I'm being honest most of my hardware aside from gaskets are from junked cars.

So my questions are:
What car could this engine have come from?
What engines have compatible parts with mine?
Are there any problems that I need to watch for when buying parts or performing these repairs?

Any and all help/info is greatly appreciated!

Well, welcome to world of swapped parts.

Don’t use mechanical parts as identifiers, it is easy to imagine someone has swapped parts from multiple engines, just like you will do, to get a runner.

The engine serial number is unique, use the stenciled one on the block, not the label on the tim8ng cover. The cylinder heads serial numbers still beg questions of existence and uniqueness ( yes, I’m a physics, math, linguistics, and philosophy major)

Volvo parts Lisle has exploded Volvo diagrams and the parts lists tell you what is compatible with which engines and serial numbers of blocks

Yeah, the timing cover actually didn't have the identifying sticker on it so those numbers are from the back of the block. It took a lot of coordination with my phone and a light to get those pics lol.(I'm not sure I've attached them right....)
And do you have a link for those exploded diagrams?

Rock and roll...remember the VIN TOOL won't work because of the engine swap and head swap? That's new territory here, haven't seen a lot of discussions on head ID

MM64 - what parts are you looking to replace? It may not matter as all those parts may be the same.

Your engine block is a 2.3 liter. On your hood or radiator core support should be a sticker which tells you what engine your car came with when new. My guess is the block is 2.3 liter and the head is original. Do you have one or two VVT hubs? Next look up what your car came with standard - one or two VVT hubs - that way we can piece together what exactly your motor is comprised of parts wise. You need to check when the switch was made - or some one more familiar will chime in with the information.

You need to look at the sticker - that will help shed some light on what may have happened.

Ok guys! I've made a breakthrough... Turns out the previous owner blew the oil pump and that's how the motor got destroyed... I'm guessing they just replaced parts to get it running again

wiki gives me this, which suggests it is a standard engine for a 2003 V70 T5 (note T5)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_Mod ... ne#B5234T3

For cars including:
2000–2004 Volvo V70 II badged as V70 T5

I found the 5234T3 as a replacement engine in a list of many at the Lisle parts site, but I am not sure this helps you get parts, just that it is listed for your car. If you give them a call they may help you chose the parts.

It's already been determined in a previous post that the engine number posted here matches the engine supplied with the car: the numbers from the block match that ID plate exactly.

The head may have been swapped and the block stayed behind, hence the factory engine number.

So if the oil pump blew... What else besides the head gasket would've died? And what do I need to look at now that it's blown again and sat for a year or so?
