1990 740 turbo resurrection

Post by vtrucker »

I recently purchased 1990 740 turbo.163,000 miles,good shape.Sat for a
year because it wouldn't start. After reading thru this invaluable forum,I
made an educated guess that the problem was crank position sensor.
VOILA!!Now I would like a little step by step on a few problems. It is an
automatic, the upshift light stays on.It feels like it either wants to shift
or maybe its slipping.About 3200rpm @ 61mph,showing no turbo boost.
Which leads to next question.Runs like a champ until guage shows it
going into yellow turbo range. Then it acts fuel starved.Changed primary
fuel filter, new plugs, new wires, have cycled old gas out,am using high octane, have not replaced catalytic converter, have not replaced or checked in tank pump or screen

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I am a little confused by
It is an automatic, the upshift light stays on.
The owner's manual states that light indicates
17 4th gear (overdrive) disengaged (automatic transmission models) or shift indicator light (manual transmission)
.

This then would mean that you are still in 3rd gear and that could be the reason the car is acting fuel starved at 61mph, which would be about its limit in 3rd.

I would suggest replacing the OverDrive Relay and/or checking the overdrive button on the shifter knob (could be sticking).

Had a similar problem in an '88 240DL, replaced the OD Relay, and the problem was solved.
