Radiator Fan - How to Test?

Post by volvocommander »

Hey all,

I have a 96 Volvo 850 R with a radiator fan that will not turn on under any conditions. I'd like to check that it is the Fan for sure before replacing the assembly.

I've just replaced the relay just above the Fan to no avail.

Is there a way I can supply power from the battery to the Fan directly, to test the motor? Or is there another way you'd recommend?

Thanks!

Pull the relay off the shroud. Ground the low or high (not both at same time) speed fan wire to the intake manifold. Should make the fan come on, unless there is a wiring issue or the motor is dead. If nothing happens, you will have to trace the positive and ground wires off the fan motor and make jumpers to connect it directly to the battery to confirm if motor is dead.
