2005 Volvo XC90 2.5T AWD No Start

Post by cim »

Hi all, looking for some advice, don't really know where to begin with this one. I bought this in December, had a broken front axle, would not start when I looked at it. Long story short, I was able to purchase it for next to nothing. Had it towed home, replaced the broken axle, threw a fresh battery in. It started right up! Moved her out of the garage and she sat...Now, she will not start... in fact nothing in the car works... no lights... all I hear is a faint relay click when I connect the battery.

Don't know if this means anything, but I noticed if I leave the battery connected after 10 minutes or so, the driver's taillight comes on and stays on until I disconnect the battery.

Where should I begin?

Charge the battery.

Which position did you leave the light switch in?
I'll bet you left it in the middle position and not 0.
Move it to POS 0. The rear tail lights will go off.

POS 0 = Off with daytime running lights when key is on.
POS 1 = Parking lights.
POS 2 = Headlights on.

First off, the ignition needs to be off for five minutes before the battery disconnect. Remove the negative cable first. When connecting the battery, the key must be in position II.

Before doing anything exotic; if you haven't done this, disconnect the battery. You need to get an eye on each battery cable connection to inspect for damage, remove and clean it. The front B+ connection is under a lid on a stud just inboard of the engine bay fuse box. This connection often gets corrosion . Check and clean the ground cable connections; the woven strap from the passenger side rear of the cam cover to the passenger strut tower and the negative from the transmission case to the plate under the air filter box, which (box) is easy enough to remove.

After everything is hooked back up, lock and unlock the central locking system, roll the windows down and up and turn the fan to max, then minimum to calibrate.

Best way, get the DiCE, first. It will help you to understand where from start.
