2005 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD PNP switch

Post by yulio78 »

Hi , I own a 2005 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD and i am having starting issues with it - i can not started with the key. That is why i have bypassed the ignition and istalled a push start button -it starts every time with no problems. After doing some research i came to the conclussion that i may have a faulty PNP (safety gear switch). The only problem is that i can not find it !!!
On the 5 cyl volvos its really easy to see and replace it but on mine i can not see it. A little prehistory: Car would not crank and start with the key. Battery light came on . Replaced starter, alternator, battery ,new maf sensor- NO efect. So i bypased the ignition. Now it starts but battery ligt is still on.
Any help would be greatly apriciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

Key turns in the ignition to POS II but car will not come out of P or is the issue something else? Not really following what works or not from the post.

There's a mechanical interlock (cable from ignition lock to shifter) which allows for gear selection only after key is in POS II.

There's also an electrical interlock (solenoid) that gets activated when the key is in POS II and the brake pedal is pressed. The solenoid is towards the front of the shifter assembly, can feel and hear it move if you put your hand on top of the shifter fascia panel.

Both interlocks need to be operating properly to be able to put the car into gear.

If you could provide more detail on exactly what works and what does not, someone ought to be able to assist more fully.

Thanks

PN 30759312 for the PNP interlock solenoid, search any of the larger OE resellers and you'll see a diagram for location.

I am able to move the gear shifter without the key being in ignition or pressing the brake pedal. Thank you for your replay!

Interlock bypass been removed? Little yellow "tophat" button under the shifter panel, can see it on the right rear of the shifter assembly, under the cover (watch , you'll see it at around 7:25). If this has been removed, you don't have any interlock (or so I'll have you believe). That you're able to shift between gears without the ignition in POS II suggests that the mechanical interlock may not be working at all.

More to the question of the ignition though, exactly why is that bypassed? Key won't turn?

The gear position sensor on that GM transmission is inside the transmission below the selector lever. If it were bad the gear positions on the instrument panel would be wrong or show "---" as you move through gears and the transmission would not operate correctly. There is a starter relay in the underhood fuse/relay box on driver's side. Has that been checked? The CEM could be faulty. Are the switchblade keys latching the key straight out of the end of the key? The chip can't be read from key if the metal key blade is not flipped the full 180 degrees from the stored position in key. If the remote part is flopped over at 90 degrees then it will not operate starter.
