Front Engine Mount Chunks

Post by Eddystone »

When I changed the front engine mount on my 98 V70, it was well and truly broken. What surprised me was that when I removed it, a big hunk of a PREVIOUS engine mount fell out, as well. Broken mount was a genuine Volvo part. The previous chunk of engine mount was not OEM. So, with about 168k miles, it would seen that I am on my fourth front mount (original, non-OEM replacement, OEM replacement, and the Rein mount I just installed). This on a wimpy non-turbo automatic.

1999 S70 T5 Turbo/Auto which is better than Abscate's T5
All U.S. market models.
All running and on the road.
PM me if you are in Ohio. I'm in Lorain.

You will find one or more other mounts are bad. That is why you are having this problem more than likely. June

Not sure if you do it frequently, but getting these bricks airborne breaks the motor mounts. Just saying ...

I looked at the front and back mounts, June, and they LOOK okay, and I cannot rock the engine. The stabilzer on top of the engine is sound.

How would you check the ones that look like little black softballs? Any ideas?

After 22 years of all that weight the original mounts have to be compressed. If you bought a Genuine Volvo mount and it failed quickly, the other mounts have to be the cause.

Thus far none of my factory mounts have failed causing engine movement on my P2, but the two bottom most mounts were replaced last year due to being compressed causing the engine/transmission to set about a inch and a half low. That might not sound like much, but it caused my car to wear axles enough in 20K to need replacement. The engine seemed solidly mounted with next to no movement. I saw the old mounts Volvo called Engine Pads and was shocked to see how squashed they were. My upper, torque rod, and front engine mounts are still original without issue.

I don't know the difference between P2 and P80 mount configuring. I'm sure P80 must have a couple lower most mounts that take the brunt of the engine weight. Check those. June

Been a whilecsince working on a P80 FWD. But ifemory serves therebare the 2 cone mounts (1 front + 1rear) near the middle of the block. Then there is the mount under the crank pulley which is the only one that tends to break (sure others can but this one most by far). I belive there is a small block mount on outer transmission side near the inner fender on LHS. These can split with age. And finally there are the upper and lower torque mounts.

The best way to check mounts is to put a floor jack with a sturdy chunk of 2" x 6" wood or likes under the oil pan and gently raise the engine to see if any of the mounts separate from the metal portions.

Lastly, when replacing the rear cone mount remember there is a locating pin on the top of the mount thatul must be aligned with a hole on the mounting bracket.

Have you got any groaning or clunking at the front end of the car? Have you checked the subframe mounts for separation between the rubber and metal outer part?

Neil.
