2004 S60 2.5T AWD - MAF Sensor Cleaning

Post by StickyPocket »

Hi all - I want to clean the MAF sensor on my 2004 turbo, but the screws seem to be some kind of special 5-point configuration. Can I remove just the sensor to clean it? Or is this meant to prevent removal? What kind of bit do I need?

Thanks.

Torx Plus IPR bits. Bosch uses them on all their MAFs. Apple uses them to discourage self service of iPhones.

You can find them on Ebay or Amazon.

Use nothing other then MAF cleaner and don't touch the active sensor elements with anything other then the MAF cleaning fluid. If you think you can use something else, you are the one that the IPR bits are there to keep out.

I pulled those suckers out with my pliers (and threw them away)

Thanks both. Oragex - which 2 torx screws would you say are least essential to remove and swap with the MAF sensor screws (Or what size screw should I have ready?)

I'm thinking at the glove box, when flipped open, there's 4 of these that secure the outer inlay, or maybe one of those that secure the glove box to the dash - there's several of them

As oragex mentions, the component on the outside of the turbo engine MAF is the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, the mass air volume sensor is inside the duct (hole) of the integrated Bosch MAF.

Both need to be cleaned to enable the engine computer to determine the intake air mass from the air temperature and airflow.

Use the MAF cleaner spray straw to direct the spay on the IAT and into the duct hole. Do not insert the straw into the duct hole as the sensor is fragile. Avoid spaying the sealing o-ring and allow at least a minute for the cleaning chemical to dry before reinstalling.

Also watch your eyes guys when you spray on the sensor - it easily splashes back and you may get the cleaner into your eyes (or even inside your nose, happened to me). These cleaners are not that healthy
