I've got a slip on takeoff issue with my T6. Car Has 133k on it. Has to build rpm and then usually grabs with a jerk and goes. This is not a consistent condition, sometimes shifting and takeoff are normal. Also have slipping in 2nd 3rd sometimes, but not consistent.
Have changed filter and fluid twice with Maxlife, about 8.5 quarts each round. PO did not maintain fluid, was dark but pan was not full of sludge as I suspected it would be, fluid did not smell cooked though I'm sure it was, little sludge on magnet. My second change left very little debris in pan just some fines on the magnet. I added another magnet last change to help grab the rest of the crap. No codes yet...
Recommendations for competent transmission rebuilders in northeast South Carolina and anyone local that might let me use their Vida/Dice unit??
Thanks all.

2003 S80 T6 with about the same mileage. The only "potential" cheap fix is a Transgo shift kit or try another transmission fluid. Did not care for Max Life. In your case may want to add a Trans-Cooler in SC. The level on those is critical for proper performance.

EDIT: First thing is to Triple check that level. I tripled checked mine after the Shift Kit install and still didn't get it right, but finally did and the off the line bump went away.

Thanks Mo, am I checking correctly using the run through the gears at 5 seconds each and wait two minutes to check level when warm? Which fluid would you recommend? I've been twisting wrenches awhile, how bad is the shift kit?
Thanks much!
Thanks much!

I believe the transmission was spec'd for cheap and easily found Dexron III. You can use Dexron VI as an upgrade, also inexpensive and easy to find. On my XC90 and S80 I used both bought from Wal-Mart.
The transmission is a 4T65E with slight modifications. It is a GM transmission found in countless cars - any reputable transmission shop that works on GM transmissions can rebuild it. All of the current rebuild kits have all of the updated parts. There is an additional rebuild kit, around $40, to cover the Volvo difference. If you go the rebuild route you will want to replace the separator plate (Volvo specific if I recall) as sometimes at your miles the check balls will wear a hole in the plate and cause sealing issues for the related circuits. If I recall this was readily available and under $100.00. Most GM shops that rebuild the transmission will know about increasing the size of two of the steels and using one or two thicker clutch discs for the other gear to get the "gap" to its optimal level. It is a tried and trued transmission at this point and a rebuild should be under $2,000.00 in a larger city, with removal and install less than $1,000.00.
If you shop around I would guess you can get the rebuild done for around $1200 with the removal and install around $600.00.
I have said this countless times - it is a GM transmission. It is 98% the same as that found in an Impala. The difference is in a few parts, which if a rebuilder wasn't told wouldn't know if given the correct part - meaning the process is the same. When you shop around make sure the installer is aware it is a 4T65E and removal is basically the same.

Most cars use operating temp when checking so from cold drive it for about 10 minutes and park on a flat spot and then check. The run through the gears is for when you do a drain and fill so it's not necessary for a level check. After running for 10 minutes the fluid and temp have all been distributed evenly.Yurgengurgen wrote: ↑09 May 2020, 06:49 Thanks Mo, am I checking correctly using the run through the gears at 5 seconds each and wait two minutes to check level when warm? As for the fluid I've been using Havoline Multi-vehicle Fluid. The Shift Kit is fairly easy if you have done a pan removal and filter replacement. Please check the link and it will have in detail everything needed for you to put in the Shift Kit. Remove the " on both ends, copy and paste if the link does not work.

for me ( had a couple ) ....it sounds like the well known problem of bad clutches and band . IF i had that issue i would buy the master rebuild kit ....around 220 dollars , and if you are a little mechanic yourself theres some great youtube videos, and you dont even need to get the transmission out . IT COULD be a little thing like shifts solenoid and pressure solenoid - that is if you are lucky . Either way if you keeps driving the car with that issue , you most definally needs to replace everything. these transmissions are shit, believe me. i have rebuild 2 of my own ( chevrolet trans sports ) they suck big time , and cant handle powers over 100 hp if you asked me

Please remember that we are here to help the OP. Without knowing his experience and skill it would be best to systematically help him find the problem. He was looking for a rebuilder in SC not a tutorial on how to rebuild. He has however changed the filter and flushed.
Trippleedge recommends a shift kit with their rebuild and that maybe something the OP could and would like to do first instead of just plucking down a bunch of money. These transmission are also very sensitive to proper level so it's best to look at the simple stuff first.
