Hey there, everyone.
My story is that of the Electronic Throttle Module (ETM).
Topic of conversation:
‘01 Silver Mystic Metallic, XC-70 w/201,004 miles.
Purchased in July 2019 for $500 w/191k.
The previous owner bought it new. Maintained well, but he complained of a slipping transmission, though this current transmission was rebuilt at 120k (Aisin 55/50) He provided all the records, and at 190k had the timing job done as well.
He had a brand new XC-60 in the driveway, and a lovely red 850 Turbo Sedan of the late 90's vintage in fantastic shape. This nice fellow needed parking space, and I was the lucky one to respond to his Advertisement first..
I drove it home. I noticed hesitation between 2nd/3rd on medium to heavy acceleration (A flare one might call it.) This I imagine, the slipping trans the previous owner thought he had. I have a Blue Point EECR5, scan tool that is fairly Volvo friendly (scans and clears ABS, SRS, Trans, Ecm, Live Data, OBD2.et. codes were:
P303- Cylinder 3 Misfire
9150- Unknown fault. Scan tool read this, but couldn’t give details.
91F0- Unknown.
There were a few others, but none affecting drivetrain. No transmission codes either. I of course had my introduction to what these unknowns were, the ETM. The ‘10 years extended, or 200k, whichever came first, back in ’06’warranty service on faulty modules.
- I gave her a fresh synthetic oil and filter change (which I’ve since done 4 more times)
- Trans drain and fill with those oil changes. (My strategy here includes Lucas Oil Stop/Slip, and Seafoam TransTune in combination each time). Shifts great, fluid smells and looks New.
- New plugs Iridium Bosch
- Bosch coil packs New
- Power Steering Service
- Both Diff. Services.
- Replaced a dented door with one from a 2001 S80. I posted on that topic. Link to that post:

I got around to the PCV system, installed new injectors, and cleaned the ETM (which was/is the Magnetti Marelli/Yellow aftermarket module). But, 91F0 and 9150 remained permanent companions. All along I had the same symptom, the hesitation in acceleration. The codes are for an internal fault. Replacement my only option.
The cost prohibitive nature of buying a remanufactured unit from Xemodex, then Volvo's Vida charge for the software, enabled me to ignore the issue. I was looking at $700-$1,000 in my area to take care of the problem with certainty.
Now, the rumor is/was that if you get an ETM froma vehicle that’s your model/year, odds are in your favor that it won’t require programming. My attention went to the salvage yards. Waiting for my Silver Mystic Metallic Unicorn with a good throttle module, to appear. It did yesterday.
I installed it today. It’s the same Magnetti Marelli unit. The serial numbers were:
8644347 For the salvage unit
8644346 for the faulty unit.
The car started right up after install
That’s the my story on the XC-70. Very happy about it, and wanted to share.
