Types of Oil for 1999 S70

Post by cwicker1 »

I have started to do maintenance on my 1999 S70.
Last weekend I drove from Greensboro, NC to Charleston, SC. 294 miles one-way, in about 5 hours, counting all of my wifes' stops.
Car was great, nothing wrong.
I'm going to have to change the oil again soon and got to wondering if I used a Synthetic blend of oil would I be creating a problem?
And if I did switch to synthetics, do I ever change the oil or just top off?

How many miles on it, over 80K?
Personally I would just stay with a good dino oil and change every 3500 to 4000 miles.
...and NEVER add synthetic over regular oil, a complete change is necessary

If you use synthetic, you still have to change it. But maybe you can go longer between changes. I use Mobil 1 10W-30 in my normally aspirated 97 850 and change it every 7500 miles. Would it be just as good (or better!) to use regular oil and change it every 3000 miles? Who knows? You will find people who will argue it either way. Consumer reports did a study several years ago where they actually ran different oils in different engines, then dismantled the engines and looked for wear. They couldn't tell the difference between any of the oils, synthetic or whatever. All modern oils are just really good, that is the bottom line.

If it has a turbo I would switch to synthetic ASAP, unless your car has high miles, then I would stay with a good dino (meaning it comes from dinosaurs) oil and change it regularly every 3K miles. Synthetic on a turbo is highly recommended because of the coking that can occur in the turbo if it gets hot and then turned off. Synthetic also seems to help keep the PCV system cleaner, keeping it from clogging so quickly. I run Mobil-1 10W30 in the summer and 5W30 in the winter (both cars) and change the oil every 5K miles. This is probably too soon with this oil but it is cheap maitenance. With the amount I drive in the S70 (100+ miles a day) this is right at an oil change every 2 months. With my wife's car (the V70) this works out to an oil change about every 3 months.
