Anyone know what this part is called? It's on the left side of the inlet manifold. popped off while driving under acceleration. Lost power and power brakes but was able to make it home. Sounded like a giant hole in the muffler and it was kind of backfiring.
I snapped it partially back on and the car sounds fine....but I don't think it's going to stay on.... anybody know what that is?

It's for the PCV system
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I don't doubt that to be the case but the round cap at the end of the manifold pooped out entirely. I'm wondering how it's supposed to be lodged in there... it's like a lid off a nestle Kwik tin....or like a paint can lid. It just popped off the manifold, I can get it part way in but I don't think it will hold....is supposed to be welded in or something....?

That's not supposed to pop out, presumably boost pressure pushed it out but I've never heard of that happening. I think the plug is just forced into the manifold.
I suspect you can just force the plug back in. If it feels very firm when seating then it should be fine, if not I would use some kind of epoxy to seal it in.
Likely the intake manifold needs to come off for that job, alas. Has the PCV ever been done on this car? How is the glove test? If it needs PCV, then remove the intake manifold and do PCV at the same time. It's a pretty big job unfortunately. If not just pull the manifold and fix, still a bit of hassle. You'll need a new IM gasket.

Yeah, sorry I guess that wasn't real helpful
And it is easier to pull the intake manifold, than the alternator. Here's your chance to install an N/A intake! (if you are so inclined)

No worries
luckily this is my 2nd 850/V70 series estate. I was thinking I might add some jb weld to really stick it in there. And I figured once I get it open just do the pcv system (my first) since I don't know the history...but I'll do the glove check first.... thanks!
