Re: 2000 V70 Door Lock actuator issues

Post by scot850 »

So I am planning to try to find time to get the 'R' back up to working again, but one of the jobs I have to do is look at replacing the lock actuators. Usual issue of them not working when the outside temperature gets above 20C, sometimes less.

Ne actuators are silly expensive and with the other work needing done, I am going to look at the repairing of the exisiting units as per RSPI's video. Now one part I am never comfortable with is is removing the failign thermal resistor and using a piece of copper wire. As it freezes up here there is the potential to cause damage thet the resistors prevent.

Has anyone tried replacing the motors? I see many replacment motors from China for lock actuators, but they often don't list the 98-00 P80's, and in this case only the 99 year but not 98 or 00?

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2pcs-12V-Car-Do ... mR&vxp=mtr

Now I recall there were 2 lock types if memoery is not failing me again. Single and dual stage. Now I believe mine are dual stage locks, but as I have replacment remote start fobs, when I press the button all doors ope, but I think there is a delay between the drivers' door and the other 4.

Now are all the motors the same or are single and dual stage different?

Thanks,

Neil.

I looked more closely at the motors on offer and they look different to the one Robert shows in his video.

So question still stands. Has anyone found a suitable motor replacement? If not, why is it so hard to find out what the thick film resistor value is and where we can buy a load of them? Manufacturers can buy them so they must be out there?

Thanks,

Neil.

Those thin film thermal breakers are to keep it from overheating, they provide no benefit at cold temperatures. Short of continuing to hit unlock and lock over and over like a politician at an ATM, you shouldn't have any issues.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Cold temperatures don't seem to matter as much but they do act like a fuse if the locks freeze to prevent the overload on the motors. Problem is anything over +20C and they stop working at all.

Just pulled x 2 rear door lock assemblies so I can re-build them with the wire mode in place of the thermal resistor.

I recall someone found a standard style 2 lead thermal resistor to solder into the wiper motors. Problem is finding the value of the resistor to try this son the doors.

Problem is being a retired engineer, I like to find 'proper' solutions rather than 'bodge' fixes.

I do not have any dead locks but I've read a few other threads and maybe this will work

https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/deta ... IP/6201878

The only issue is the rather moderate resistance at normal operating conditions which is roughly 500 at 25 C.

Alternatively, you could just wire mod it and then stick one of these on the motor surface. https://www.digikey.ca/en/products/deta ... 0M/5409383
It will cut off given a high enough temperature and then reset. We will need a best guesstimate of the stall power as it has a maximum switching power.

Good Luck!

Thanks yanga001. Like you say, it may be a case of trial and error to figure out the correct rating for this part. Hardest part of the repair will be accessing the part of the motor casing in the door actuator motor. It is kind of buried, unlike that on the headlight wiper motors.

I did send a contact query to Digikey late last week to see if they can identify what the 'tile' is called and if they can supply it. So far no response.
