Fuel smell outside + P0496

Post by Tompolish »

Hi just bought my first volvo, 2004 xc90 t6. Having issues with strong gas smell outside on the passenger side. Also throwing me p0496 code and rough starts, takes a few seconds crank to start when cold. Just replaced the evap solenoid under the intake and problem persists. Fuel pump, evap carbon box or filler neck? No recalls here on the volvo site. I already replaced fuel filter and battery. Much appreciate any help, thanks

You most likely have a leak somewhere at the fuel tank or rear fuel lines. Search for 'fuel leak' in this forum. If nothing found search the 2001+ V70 forum. There was a common problem with a crack forming in the fuel pump housing for some models.

Check where the leak is located before replacing anything. Can you see any wet areas underneath? You may need a lift or ramps to get enough clearance to look.

Fuel lines run down the passenger side.

ECM-4007 (P0496) Evaporative emission (EVAP) system. Signal too high

Condition
When the control module activates evaporative emission system (EVAP) control, the idle air trim or short-term fuel trim will change. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-4007 is stored if the engine control module (ECM) does not detect any change in the idle air trim or in the long term fuel trim when evaporative emission (EVAP) control is active. The engine control module (ECM) interprets this as a faulty evaporative emission (EVAP) system.

Substitute value
  • None.
Possible source
Open:
  • Faulty EVAP canister purge valve.
Closed:
  • Blocked hose between the EVAP canister and the EVAP canister purge valve
Blocked hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the intake manifold
    Faulty EVAP canister purge valve.

Fault symptoms
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit.

Pulled middle row seats, lifted carpet and inspected fuel pump and sending unit. Pump is leaking at the common top cap point. I cleaned up the gasolind and put jb weld to dry for 24 hours with windows open. There is a fuel pressure sensor perhaps it was throwing the code due to leak. Also evap solenoid tubing was very brittle, going to get small size hose clamps installed at engine bay. Do those check valves out of the evap solenoid clog?

Lastly, it appears the fuel pump seal has also crumbled... Will go buy one from the local volvo dealer on Monday before I turn it over and check for leaks. Thanks all
