Blue Face Instrument Panel Gauges

Post by subzerocarfanatic »

I have a question, I found someone who has a set of 1999 V70 R that he says had the blue face gauges and is selling them, he says they will work in the C70. My question is, is that true because they do not look obviously blue like the newer style ones do and are they compatible with my 2000 C70 and lastly is there a way to calibrate it so the mileage transfers to new gauges.

99-2000 S/V/C70s should all be interchangeable to my knowledge. Most people just take apart and transfer the actual blue parts themselves instead of swapping the entire cluster. There are some ethical considerations if you just swap clusters without documenting it and sell the car later on.

look on youtube or even the ebay listings. The Blue faces in some images look "almost" black, they are not as bright as the P2 R and later R-design clusters. IIRC, the data for the odometer should come from the ECU. I have my blue face gauges in reserve, just went and checked, and the odometer portion is not a part of the instrument, it is part of the cluster. If you are concerned about it, you can swap the blue faced gauges into your board and cluster.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

So is it just the face part of the gauge that would need swapping, not the bulbs as well? What about the DICE, I guess I could not use it to update and syn the speedo.

The gauge itself just uses an input signal. Your cluster will hold the odometer info. I don't believe you will need to synch the cluster. The bulbs are in holders that plug into the back side of the cluster. And it is the face and works of the gauges you will swap. It is really simple once you open the cluster and look. Just a bone type tool and gentle pressure to pry the gauges out and off the pins, place them with hand pressure. The odometer and trip computer cluster (thermometer, clock) will stay behind.
