Contemplating full fuel injector replacement

Post by SonicAdventure »

Hi, was out for a long drive tonight. When I got home, just as I was parking the CEL came on throwing P0301 / #1 cyl misfire. The car was running fine.

I’m inclined to believe it’s probably the fuel injector, as the car was tuned up 1 year ago, new ignition coil, cap, rotor, wires and plugs. No issues at all since.

I was thinking I’d swap #1 injector with #2 and see if I get it to throw a code there. If the misfire follows the injector, I’m inclined to just replace all 5, and keep the known good ones as spares. I don’t like messing with the fuel rail and I don’t want to have to keep taking it on and off.

Assuming I do go with full replacement, what is the best place to buy these? 96 850, auto, non turbo. Based on the appearance of the ones in there now, I assume they are the 24 year old originals.

You’ve got the spares from the 1998 don’t you?

I would send them out for the cleaning service before buying new, they aren’t cheap

...weren’t they in the car when you picked it up? I didn’t think they would be compatible with an 850 so I thought I left them. Just checked and mine are the light orange ones. If you have any of those spare, can you send me one? I’ll PayPal you the postage. Thanks

A 95 860 non-turbo has the yellow injectors.

Best bet is to send off a set of factory yellows for rebuild and test, as abscate mentioned. Will run you $75 - $100 or so. I like these guys but it's been a while https://www.cruzinperformance.com/.

My problem is that I only have one car and no back up, so I can’t have the car down for any length of time. If I have to order a brand new set and just block off a few hrs to swap them out, it is what it is, unfortunately. At least I will (theoretically) have four working spares...

Based on recent tuneup and otherwise good running condition (even with CeL) should I be looking at anything other than the #1 injector?

Everything appears tight, no leaks or loose wires.

Fuel injectors are like 6 bucks each at the junkyard.

Also keep in mind - the misfire codes are notorious for not reporting the right cylinder or even the same cylinder all the time, so you will want to keep an eye on that.

Are the wires Bougicord?

You’re right and while it’s running good I should probably snatch some up...there is a 94 850 at the one near me, would those work? Or maybe Abscate has one from my old 98 - is there a list of compatible injectors?

And yes, wires are Bogicords from FCP last summer

Lots of things can happen in a year.

Misfire one cylinder only. Most common causes are:
  • Defective or loose Spark Plug.
Defective or loose spark plug wire / coil over plug.
    Distributor failure.
    Low compression on cylinder.

On a car this old check the wiring to the injector for shorts. Inspect the wiring insulation. Could be worn through and intermity shorting out. Could be dirty connector to injector reducing the electrical power transfer to the injector.

If the car has ~200,000 miles or more, a set of remanufactored injectors would most likely pay for themshelfs in terms of saved fuel.
