Dead Ecm. 2001 V-70 X/C.

Post by PixelDust »

Hello There,

2001 Volvo V70 XC AWD L5-2.4L Turbo VIN
YV1SZ58D111014658 B5244T3

During a PCV job today, I failed to disable the car battery.

With the cooling fan, and intake manifold removed; I knocked my ratchet off the core support, and into the engine bay. It created a bridge between the alternator power supply, and the bumper frame.

BIG SPARK. The ratchet quickly fell through to the floor after maybe a ½ second of solid contact, smoke from the engine ground strap at the firewall caught my eye. My heart sank, I knew I'd made a huge mistake.

I then disabled the battery. I finished the PCV job, put everything back together, and filled up the coolant. It started up, but barely held idle. Unresponsive throttle, check engine light on.

Before this, the car was DTC free, and ran flawlessly.

Ecm Codes are:

2000: Engine Coolant Temp Sensor fault

6000: AC Relay Short Circuit

4020: fuel tank pressure sensor fault

904A: Code generated when multiple codes are present.

905D: Same as 904A

9530- Accelerator pedal sensor fault.

I disabled the battery, waited, and pulled the ECM for confirmation.

Photos of the damaged ECM:

My question is now what do I do? I love the car. It has 202,000 miles, but has been very well maintained.

I don't have the funds to pay for new unit, nor do I have the funds to pay a dealer to program that new unit.

$650 through Xemodex, but I'm unsure if they can copy my unit to another, because of the damaged done to my ECM. (not sure how Xemodex works entirely, so excuse me if I've butchered the description of the procedure).

I once pulled a used ETM from a scrap car, installed it into this same car, and got lucky. The car learned the used unit on its own. No Vida necessary.

From what I've gathered on the forums here, people I've talked to,and research through All-Data, this is not possible with the ECM. Terrible news.

If nothing can be done, maybe an arrangement can be made with a forum member to buy the car. I can't bring myself to sell the car to a scrapper, it has sentimental value to me. But if I know its going to a good place, it wouldn't be as bad to say goodbye. It can be superb parts car for anyone that has the space/need.

Thanks Guys

Talk to Yagger on this forum to see if he can clone your ECM.

I’m not convinced that trace is the cause of your problem. There are many things that can cause bad idle.

Have you reread codes after clearing them?

Ohm out the temp sensor (ECT) ..data is in this forum.

I've cleared the codes several times, and they come back immediately.

No, I didn't bother checking resistance in any of the components. I suppose I can do that.

I'll talk to Yagger. Thank you.

Worst case to try...it might be possible for someone with the right tools to lift the software from your ECM physically by removing the chip and soldering it into anew one.

I think mike is AUS has some experience with this, user precopster

Did you replace the ground strap? A high resistance at this point can effect a lot of circuits. B+ and grounds are choke points.
