1998 V70 LPT pcv replacement 244k miles

Post by Sufbug »

Hello,

The glove test has failed, and when I take the dipstick out, and gently rev the engine, there is smoke coming out of the dipstick tube....

So I want to replace the pcv system which after much diagnosis and thought, it needs to be done and is probably the cause of my exhaust smell. (See my other thread).

I have been watching YouTube videos, and feel I can do this in the driveway.

The engine is a
B5254T
And the
engine serial number is 994074

See enclosed pic

Question.... Any thing to watch out for, any unknown to be prepared for ahead of time?

Any extra parts to have on hand? (One Youtube vid suggested injector orings just in case, lucky this kit comes with them)

And, any other things I can do, when I am down in that section of the engine, while I am in that area?

Any pointers or video links would be helpful. Thank you!

Also, because of the milage, and I am hoping the valve stem seals are ok, I did a little preventative by adding ATP at-205 to rejuvenate the valve seals. Not my favorite way to fix something, but I did do this with my trans am and it fixed the smoking problem.

I am still going to do this job, so any info is helpful!

Pics Enclosed!

And got some extra stickers and stuff from IPD for a lower coefficient of drag! LOL

You may want to look at the modified pipe system that many recommend over the standard pipework, especially with a higher mileage engine. It helps reduce clogging of the narrow pipes and lessens the crankcase internal pressure.

You need to use oil compatible pipe. If I recall it is 5/8" internal diameter.

I have not done this myself but I know a few people on here recommend this mod.

You will want to remove the air intake tube between the air cleaner and turbo so that you can clean out the PCT orifice.

During the reassembly, do not tighten the bottom bolt of the intake support bracket until the intake manifold is back in place. The bracket needs to move slightly to center the top bolt in the manifold. Then tighten the bottom bolt.

For a first time, I suggest allocating 8 hours. You might want to take photos prior to removing items, it makes it easier to put back together.

Which hose -tube- pipe in the system is the one I make bigger? And I get a 5/8 size?

Thanks

Ok cool! So clean out the PCT opening. Gotcha!

Ok keep the bolts loose on reassembly....
And take photos. Will do!

And.....can you comment on the 5/8 hose size? What hose need to be bigger, and is the 5/8 the size I wanna get? Thanks!

Couldn't remember all the details as I have not done this repair personally. However, this is a long thread but most of the info is at the front. 3/8" not 5/8" as per my faulty memory!!

I bought the whole PCV system for apx $ 100 and still had too much crankcase pressure. Did the modified system for less than $ 20 and that helped quite a bit more.

Used the same separator box, just cleaned it.
2ft. of 5/8" oil resistant hose ( bought it from a heavy truck /equipment etc parts store )
4ft of the same in 1/4"
A 3" or 4" light compression spring that will slide inside the 5/8" hose where it makes a hard nighty degree turn coming out of the separator box.
( local ACE )
And I used a 1/2" 90* electrical metal conduit sweep to make the turn under the throttle body.

The 1/4" hose is a bit tight to get on one end but other than that no problems or issues. I did have the 1/4" pop off the intake manifold because I didn't put a clamp on it. Dumb Dumb...But all fixed now.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

I would replace your oil filler cap o-ring, they like to flatten/harden and leak. I changed mine, after doing the PCV system, and top of the engine is dry after a year.

I cant remember where the grounds are, but might be a good idea to clean off the ground connections if they are down there while the intake is off. Also, clean the starter cables, with that mileage, they could be in questionable condition, and a bad connection shows its face on the coldest days.

A serious flaw in the procedures described in that link is using cheap heater hose. Cheap heater hose has two potential problems (1) it can kink and collapse under the manifold where the hose makes a 90 degree bend, clogging the PCV and (2) it is not oil resistant and may eventually turn to mush again clogging the PCV. MVS member tryingbe put together the best solution, he used fuel line or some other oil resistant hose and a 5/8 brass barbed 90 degree elbow for the bend under the manifold.
