Power steering pump recommendation
I have a whining power steering pump with a lot of miles on it that I need to replace and am looking for a recommendation on a good replacement part. I'm leaning towards the MTC pump sold by IPD or a remanufactured part. Anybody have any experience with these replacement parts? Is it difficult to remove the pulley to install on the remanufactured part if needed? I do have a PS pulley puller but not an installer tool. Thanks

Have you considered a used pump? Remanufactured is hit and miss on quality. Usually the area stores have sub-par quality rebuilds - my experience has been 1 in 4 leak and are just a new (and bad) paint job. The site sponsors usually carry better parts and rebuilds as they closely manage their return product rates, especially site sponsors that have life time warranties.
As for install - the serpentine belt is the hardest part to remove. After that it is pretty easy - I have never used any fancy tools for the pulley. You may want to crack the pulley bolts when the belt is still on.
One other item - make sure you order the correct part - I have received an incorrect ps pump once because of some strange part number change.

You may have a bad reservoir. If it appears to stay wet around the cap than replacing the reservoir is your first action. A part breaks inside causing the fluid to aerate causing a noisy pump. Its a common failure on a P2. June

I have one that works perfect that just came off a 2002 V70. It is being replaced along with all other rotating engine parts during a performance (?) rebuild. You may have it if you get me a mailing label. MVS has helped me much over the years; I'd like to return the favor. If you'd like it try PM'ing me (not quite sure how that works) or I'll check back on this thread later (after working on the Volvo all day).

That's another question I had, the reservoir is not wet or leaking on the outside but I did notice a steady stream of air bubbles in the reservoir when viewing with the cap off. There's no leaks anywhere in the system yet there's the stream of bubbles and I don't know if that's normal or not.

No the turn down has likely broken off. When not broken you can't see the return stream. I'll video mine when I get home so you can see what normal looks like. Once the reservoir was replaced and air blead from the rack the whine/ grind sound went away. June

I'll take a closer look inside the reservoir and also video and post if possible. This would be good news if I just need to replace the reservoir. thanks!

Here is my car 205K original power steering pump replacement resistor, quiet pump now. No aeration now. June

Thanks for the video June, very helpful. I took a short video of my reservoir but file format was not recognized so I wasn't successful uploading it.
The fluid in your video looks much better that mine with the air bubbles although I'm not exactly certain what's the cause, the return path within the reservoir doesn't look broken but there could be a crack I'm not seeing. At this point I'm going to take a final look with fluid removed but will likely just replace the reservoir. Thanks again for the video.

The reservoir is a common failure and as long as you have fluid aeration your pump will make all sorts of noise. Mine did for quite a while. My pump was not damaged and as you see is in good working order at 205K. I hated all the groaning an one day ran across a post about this problem. Sure enough it fixed it. I found this video of my engine minus the noisy pump and the odometer had 170K so 35K later the pump is still fine.
