1999 S80 T6 - Parked overnight, now engine making noise?

I own a 1999 S80 T6 that I had been working on for a few months, replaced old gaskets, fix transmission leaks, replaced all the fluids, new brakes and calipers, lower control arms, inner and outer tie rods, and just overall fixing and replacing little things. I got it to the point where I was happy with it and it was performing well, driving it around for months with no issues.

Then I parked it one night in my driveway, woke up the next morning and went to start my car. Upon ignition, a horrible noise was coming from under the hood, so I opened it up and started it again to see if I could find the source. At first it sounded like the starter motor, but after asking a neighbor to take a look the sound appeared to change, and was now coming from the engine itself. The engine had never had any issues, and always started and ran well, so it was not something I was even slightly concerned about prior to this.

So now I am stuck, the car obviously does not run well, but I really like the car and have put a lot of effort into working on it, I would hate to have to just junk it now.

So I am wondering if maybe this issue could be fixed? Or maybe it is worth doing an engine swap?

Do you have cats or other small animals in the neighborhood?

It would not be the first time an animal was cought and made noise under the hood. Can you listen with a tube or screw driver at various places to try to determine the source of the noise? Does it change with engine RPM? Can you record it so others can hear it? It is unlikely you will need a new engine if it was fine and now has a noise. When were the accessory belt and timing belt replaced?

The starting was not smooth sounding? I wonder if you have sludge in the intake screen or bad O-ring at oil pan. There is a updated oil pick-up tube to prevent sludge from clogging the screen. You should check the oil pressure manually. Did your last filter have trash? June

volvolugnut - I posted a video, the noise seems to be coming from the top of the engine on the left side (in the video).

June - I did an oil change less than 1000 km ago, plug and filter were clean. I'll have try an oil pressure test.

Sorry, I did not watch the video earlier.
That kinda sounds like something rubbing on a cog belt. Can you remove the belt covering on the right side (from drivers position) and see what you can see there? Maybe the plastic belt guard is loose and rubbing. If you remove any covers, inspect them for wear spots.

When we talked yesterday, the description sounded like you thought it might be from the starter motor. Having listened to the video, it sounds much more like a bearing giving out. The others have pointed to a couple of good points. It does sound to me oil starvation to me so maybe June is onto something. Not sure if this is yours but maybe a parts car?

The first and second time I started the car the sound was different (more of an grinding noise) it seemed to be coming from the drivers side area (which led me to the starter motor). After that I left the car in my driveway for a few weeks, waiting for a neighbor to come by and take a look. When I started it for him (3rd time) the sound was like in the video, and originating from the passenger side of the engine. This had me very confused already, that the first sound had resolved itself, leaving a different sound in its place.

I have seen that car on Kijiji, not mine, but considered it for parts.

I'm working on your schedule, so only when you're free! Greatly appreciated.

First thought was lack of lubrication. I assume you've checked the oil level or have a correct oil for winter? Second, the sounds is (rhythmic) like a misfire.
