1998 V70 GLT - she had a no start issue (turned out to be the security system) that had me tow her back to the house. Somehow the towing company smacked my oil pan and cracked it. By the time he got to my place every drop of oil was gone.
I've looked around for a replacement but the cheapest I'm seeing is around $600. Anyone have suggestions on where to find one cheaper? Or options to repair the crack - like alumaloy welding or JB Weld (which I wouldn't trust honestly) something along those lines?
Cracked oil pan - suggestions?

Let me see if I have an N oil pan in the garage. We've converted both of our cars to RN-style oil pans/coolers, so I wouldn't need an N pan.
The '98 should use the same pan as a '96 or '97.
I for sure wouldn't need $600 for one...(or even a fraction of that)

Can you not fit a later pan to an earlier motor? The difference is the newer (99-) has the oil cooler built into the pan. You would have to remove the oil cooler thermostat and pipe work from the radiator and car, but not a bad thing as the thermostats are NLA if they fail.
I understood the pans are otherwise interchangeable. Please correct me if I am wrong?!
Neil.

94-98 turbos all use the same oil pan. Chuck W is your best bet, otherwise back to eBay or upgrade to the newer pan and oil cooler like Neil said.
A reasonably skilled welding shop could probably fix that if you pulled the pan, cleaned it up and brought it in. But still might cost about $100.
The metal PS line next to the pan takes a strange turn near the bottom of the pic, that's not broken too I hope?

Pretty sure this is what I'll end up doing. The pan has to come off no matter what, so I'm going to clean it up and experiment with alumaloy first. If I fail I'll take it to a pro and let him shake his head at me with disgust at my amateur work while taking my money to fix it.

You freaked me out for a second, I looked at the pic and it really does look like the line is severed so I ran back and and double checked. Fortunately it's untouched. Near as I can tell the tow guy droped it straight down onto something. The damage to the pan isn't from a forward strike, it took a vertical hit.

I rebuilt those oil cooler lines just last year. I hate to gut all that work if I can find a way to repair what I have. But I'll keep that in mind as an option.scot850 wrote: ↑30 Nov 2020, 16:38 Can you not fit a later pan to an earlier motor? The difference is the newer (99-) has the oil cooler built into the pan.
