Hey guys, I inherited a very well-maintained automatic transmission 97 850 from my Mom, who died in 2015. It currently has around 220k on it and I intend to keep it going for quite a while longer. It has, for quite a few years, had an issue where reverse would work sporadically, or poorly, or on a delayed basis. I had a Volvo mechanic check it out and he said he would need to tear into it to diagnose and it may just need a new transmission. So, I decided to live with it.

Recently, though, I've added a CEL, up arrow light, and a code P0755 to the mix. So, my current plan is to find a wrecked lower mile Volvo and pull the transmission from it to swap into my car. Thus, my question: what other years/models would share the transmission with my 850? Thank you guys!

Andy

Every '96 & '97 na.
It's practicaly the same auto transmission in all na models but something about speed sensor is different on earlier models from '92-'95.

Have you had the transmission oil changed out? Do you know if it has ever been done? If unknown, for maybe a $100 or less in oil and a crush washer it may be worth doing a couple of oil dumps and fills first.

My first 850 was a '95, and it started doing goofy stuff like this. Turned out throwing a Park/Neutral switch at it carried me through another couple years, but as I recall I did a fluid change too; don't remember the sequence.

Thank you, guys! I appreciate the responses. It has been a while since I've changed transmission fluid, and will definitely give that another shot. Will look into a new switch as well. Cheers!

Andy
