Vibrations on idle

Post by Kanam102 »

Hi there. Patient is 2002 S60 2.0T B5204T5 AT. I'm hoping that someone had this kind of problem, because I'm running out of ideas. I have vibrations palpable on engine and steering wheel while in idle, but only on idle (~650RMP), because it goes away with the touch of the accelartor. Position of transmission changes nothing. What I did so far:
  • spark plugs changed to NGK Iridium
  • changed upper engine mounting and lower torque rod
  • changed AC clutch
  • cleaned throttle body (VIDA readings are ok)
  • checked commpresion (ok)
  • two ignition coils changed to used originals in good shape (one died in december, second a week ago)
  • checked engine pads (seems ok)
Just after changing second coil the engine seemed to run smooth, but then I warmed him up and vibrations came back. I saw ideas with cleaning fuel injectors, disconnecting MAF and other wizzardry concerning intake system, but before I'll go down the rabbit hole I would like to ask if someone had this kind of problems before.

I've been thinking about checking for vacuum leaks, but I don't have meter for that - I could do smoke test if someone would tell me where can I find top-accesible (currently I don't have access to garage with lift or channel) vacuum hose. Also, there is no hissing from oil cap/dip stick, no stored codes, RPM gauge does not fluctuate.

I have access to DiCE and VIDA.
Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge

Subframe bushings made a huge difference on the engine vibrations that came through the steering wheel. I did the engine mounts ( all 5 ) at the same time. My front hydraulic mount was separated almost completely so that may have been the cause. My XC 70 had 280,000 kms when I did it so all those parts were well past their useful life.

I'm trying to find on VIDA bushings that you are talking about but I'm having a hard time to do that. Could you tell me part number for those?

Part numbers may be different for your S60. There's 5 engine mounts/dampeners in total and 4 hockey puck sized subframe bushings, 1 on each corner of the subframe. Does your engine run poorly causing vibration? These Volvo 5 cylinders naturally have a unique vibration, even when everything is new. I would describe it as a 4 cylinder diesel type vibration. Mine idles at about 725 RPM and vibrates nicely, if I bring it up to 750 or more is smoothes right out.

Is there any adjustment of the idle possible? Saab 9-5 automatics had similar issues, there was a TSB to increase the idle speed by 50rpm which helped quite bit. I've replaced all the motor mounts on mine, which made a massive difference, but it's still not that smooth when stopped in gear. Perfectly smooth in park or neutral though, and while driving. Subframe bushings seem OK, only 119K miles on the old girl. It was BAD with the old mounts, shook the dash in neutral. The rear mount was completely collapsed.

My dad had a brand new one in 2002, I remember how the engine vibrated from day one. We had my mom’s V8 Cutlass Supreme to compare it to which was smooth as silk. I quite like the vibration of the Volvo’s although it became a lot more solid and dampened once I changed the bushings and mounts. I wonder if you’re steering coupler might be worn out also if the vibration is unusual?

AFAIK idle RMP correction is only possible by reprogramming ECM, as ECM controls throttle angle - I couldn't find any setting in VIDA to change that. My vibrations however don't react to transmission position.

I'll try to find some place to look under engine, on the engine mounts and bushings. I don't suspect coupler as I can feel those vibrations also on the seat.

Is this a new issue with your car? Is it vibrating because the engine is running poorly or misfiring? Or is it normal engine vibration from a Volvo engine? As I had mentioned, these engines have a natural vibration that you will be unsuccessful at dampening. Perhaps compare your vibration with another car same model as yours to determine if it's "normal".

I don't recall that car had this vibrations when I bought it. It gotten worse since I had first ignition coil failure - engine was shaking like crazy. I was worried that whole body would fell apart
Second failure was much less noticeable - I wonder why first one was so bad and I didn't notice second failure.
