850 Manual Transmission/Clutch Issue

I had the clutch replaced on my '94 850 about 19,000 miles ago. Since the clutch replacement it's been hard to get into first gear, sometimes it will go into first smoothly, but other times, it won't go into first gear and I have to start out in second gear. Now I am unable to shift the car into first or second gear. Third, fourth, fifth and reverse all work. When the car is at idle in neutral with the clutch up the idle is very noisy and when I press the clutch down the noise goes away. I'm able to drive it in reverse but once I let up on the clutch it is extremely noisy. I suspect it's maybe an issue with the linkage and or bushings. Any other suggestions?

Poor clutch engagement is typically an adjustment problem, throw out bearing bad, glazed flywheel, or defective clutch plate. As you said, the adjustment is first to be checked because it is easiest. Do you have hydraulic or mechanical clutch?

Thanks for the replay and welcome, volvolugnut. The clutch is hydraulic. I'm suspecting the throwout bearing.

When you made clutch replacement, what parts have been replaced precisely ?

I had a mechanic in Bend that is a Volvo/VW/Audi specialist replace it with a sachs clutch kit I bought from FCP Euro that included the pressure plate, driven disc and the throw out bearing. The mechanic had some issues (but couldn't tell me what they were) and ended up taking over a month to replace the clutch. Luckily it was summer and I could ride my bike to work. It was difficult to get the transmission into 1st gear after he did the work and the same mechanic told me he couldn't "adjust it".
I suspect not all parts were replaced...
I had a few great mechanics in the Portland, OR area, but since moving I have yet to find a good mechanic in Bend, OR that is well versed in Volvos.
