stripping a 98 S70 parts car questions about interchangeability with a 1998 V70

Post by bronco »

Ive finally decided I have too many junk cars in the yard and while I drive a 1998 V70 Wagon my 2 parts cars are 1998 S70's

I have one with a dead motor and good trans and one with a good motor and dead trans.

Various simpler items have been removed from both but I want to get rid of at least one whole car

First up the dead motor good trans car because the up arrow flashes on my V70 sometimes and the rear driveshaft is already gone.

My V70 also needs a steering rack and this car has a good rack with all new tie rods control arms struts done not too long before it blew off an oil line and seized the engine.

So I know the engine is junk and don't care about it Ive been allotting an hour or 2 here and there to it when its in the shade.

Most of the front of the engine is stripped off I attacked the back the other day. Today I removed the Cat and downpipe , turbo and exhaust manifold . The cat and pipe are in good shape but in looking around online I'm seeing the V70 has a different part number so I'm wondering if I should save it for my car or scrap it? Anyone know whats different about the V70 downpipe that would make this unusable?

The turbo worked fine and seems fine looking around it should fit my V70 but maybe only works on other 1998's ?

The exhaust manifold is fine came right off , is that a multi year item or will it only work on a 1998 ? A quick look at rock auto incorrectly seems to show a non turbo manifold labelled as a turbo manifold

The rack should work for me so that will come off next , as far as the transmission goes I'd like to swap it in in place of the AWD trans in my wagon if required so what else will I need to take that I may not be thinking about , harness or brackets or random doo dads?

This water pipe that goes across under the turbo looks like something I should try to save not sure if its the same as my V70 but its quite the sculptured work of art and doesn't look like an easy item to get on short notice so while I'm here I might as well.

Obviously I'll save the oil and water turbo lines , these things are so much nicer to deal with without an angle gear in the way that mine could ready to explode any moment is entirely possible

while im in here what else is a must pull ?

Mechanically, 98 V70 and 98 S70 are the same. There are differences in the body panels and the rear seats but otherwise anything swaps as long as the configuration is the same (AWD and AWD, or HPT and HPT, etc). Even if configuration is different much is the same, though 98 AWD comes with a lot of rear suspension and fuel tank headaches not present in the FWD cars.

So it sounds like your V70 is AWD is that right? If so that is LPT.

What about the S70s? Are they turbo cars? If so, are they HPT or LPT? AWD or FWD?

The LPT cars are usually spec'ed with a 13T. On the std HPT cars (non-R, etc) you'll find a 15G or 16T.
'97 854 T5 - Manual Swap/M4.4/COP/NA cams/P2R Brakes/16T/ chassis bracing/ XC70 nose swap
'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.

The Others- '83 TBird turbo, '85 Mercury Marquis LTS (1 of 134), '86 LTD Wagon, '81 Granada GL, '76 Beetle, '93 F-150 I6

What Chuck said - check the nameplate on the turbo. It may be all oily and need wiping off. Like this: Image

A 98 HPT will have a 16T but a 15g is close to it performance-wise.

The one I just took off has a totally different label that doesn't say volvo I assume its a replacement I suppose it would be tough to figure out what it is , its only a number no name or words at all. The turbo I have off already from a different sedan has a 13 on the label.

The radiator is new I will definitely keep that but is there any point in saving the intercooler?

A picture might help on ID-ing the turbo.

Want to know how to strip out the motor and front end fast? Then refer to my 98 xc trailer conversion pics. Of course place cinder blocks under the subframe and lower entire car before disconnecting subframe :P
